Today we’d like to introduce you to Noel Fischetti.
Noel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started doing makeup completely by accident. I grew up sort of feeling like makeup was a feminine practice and I didn’t identify with it, I was naturally an artist but I was sorta brainwashed into denying my creative self because in Detroit and southeastern Michigan, artists didn’t really have a lot of opportunity to make money. In 2010 I was graduating high school, and coming out of the recession I was terrified of not making money, At 18 I was hired at a local Sephora because my mom had a friend who managed the store, and I wasn’t too excited. But by the time I was about to turn 20 I was completely dolled up and was already an Operations manager. I bloomed creatively and developed strong management skills. I used my artistic heart to sell product and to connect with my customers in helping them see how they can also express themselves. Just after I turned 20, I was hired by NARS Cosmetics at a counter. NARS has an awesome education program for their artists and I was over the moon when I found out that they would fly me to Chicago to teach application techniques, sanitation and how to make and keep your clients. I am extremely lucky to have been paid to learn how to do makeup. I am still grateful to the account executive who hired me, I stayed at the counter for two years and learned to connect deeper with clients, I also had to learn to do makeup very well and very fast to keep a job that is based on sales. Its a very “think on your feet,” problem solving and competitive environment. This is where my strength in freelancing grew, My clients gradually wanted me in their homes and on their photo shoots. I built a website and this past Christmas I left retail and moved to LA. Los Angeles has treated me very well. The abundance of opportunity for creative people here is astronomical. in 6 months I already feel like I am building repeat clients, I also love the diversity of work I can do here in a city with industry. One day I’m working on a music video in the desert, the next I’m working with body paint and on another I am doing clean simple beauty in a studio. I love that I always feel challenged here.
Has it been a smooth road?
My greatest struggle is the same as a lot of other freelance artists; We struggle with doubting ourselves from time to time. I try to overcome this by reminding myself that every job I get, I feel like I am giving a gift to my client and being paid for it, I don’t feel like I am just going to work anymore, I feel like I am being given a chance to share my gift,
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and career?
I’m not really sure I identify with luck. I really identify with learning experiences and also manifesting. Most of the “bad” experiences I’ve had are just experience that taught me the importance of doing services under contract. I feel if I client is put off by legitimacy then that is not a client you need to be working with anyway.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel that most of my success comes from being grateful. Moving to LA from a city that still has a struggling economy and also almost no industry makes me feel like I just upgraded to a place of abundance. I feel like every job I book is an awesome opportunity because that type of opportunity didn’t really exist for me in Detroit. My energy is then brought to the project and it makes everyone feel good to have a good team.
What do you love about our city and what do you dislike?
The only thing I have disliked about LA is the weather. I know that sounds crazy but its too hot and bright here for this girl! I get stoked for overcast and a chance to hide my body with layers. Other than that, I love LA. I love the diversity in its people, food, entertainment. I feel like this city is full of culture and its competitiveness brings out the best in everything.
