Meet Dovid Einstein

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dovid Einstein.

Dovid, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up on the west side, and attended orthodox Jewish schools for my whole childhood. At 17, I decided to attend a rabbinical school in Jerusalem. I spent 3 years there, followed by one in Manchester, England. I then received my rabbinic ordination from an academy in Melbourne, Australia.

In 2011, I returned to the states and decided I wanted to become a CPA. I took a job as a bookkeeper at a CPA form and concurrently took extension classes in Accounting at night.

I love public accounting, because you are always looking at different stuff. I get to see how many different types of businesses work, and what makes them tick. I also get to meet many successful business people, and learn from them.

Has it been a smooth road?
Working full time while taking night classes is always hard. Getting married while doing both of the above is harder.

Having a child while studying for the CPA exams is even harder.

Additionally, for someone with my background, it was not always easy to find a job. People like to see boring on a resume. Undergrad in UCLA, Internship at bug 4 accounting firms, etc. They don’t want to see a rabbi who took night classes and has kids.

But thank God, I have been slowly building my own firm.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I started taking my own clients almost immediately. I obviously do all kinds of bookkeeping, accounting and taxes. I am different from your average CPA form, because I am small. This allows me to spend considerable time on each individual client. Rather than pass work to younger possibly less experienced staff, I do all the work myself. I also work out of my house, so I am not paying high overhead.

I also provide audit, review and other types of assurance work. Most small CPA firms don’t do this work.

I am most proud of helping people with serious tax issues, many times at a financial loss for me. You come across people who have either made financial mistakes, or ignored tax agencies letters, and are looking serious repercussions.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I obviously dislike the traffic, and would prefer cooler weather. I love the size and diversity of the city. I get calls from different types of clients every day. Also, because the city is so big, I feel like I can collaborate with other CPA’s on jobs and not feel like I am stealing their business. There is enough business to go around.
