Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna Blanchard.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was hired at The Dance Co. in 1981 as an instructor. In 1983, I was offered to be co-partner at the studio. Now I am sole owner/director of the studio. I guess that adds up to 34 years! We began with one room and now have 4 beautiful dance rooms and have raised hundreds of dancers. I have a small army of incredibly talented women who teach Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Contemporary and Hip Hop.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been a struggle at times. I’ve learned from all the parents, instructors and students who have passed through my doors. Many people believe they have a better way to do things, however, when they step back and see the progress their dancer makes, it impresses them. In the long run, they realize that dance is more than just steps. It’s discipline, dedication, and natural ability. Everyone’s dance journey is different.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Dance Co. – what should we know?
The studio is a home away from home for our students. We specialize in training the youngest dancer (3 yrs.) through high school graduation. We’ve trained many who’ve gone on to dance professionally and we have many 2nd gen students. We provide an encouraging, safe environment for students to explore dance and reach for their dancing dreams whether it be high school or college dance teams, a ballet company or commercial dance. We are extremely proud to have imparted the love of dance to so many people. It is a privilege to have seen so many children grow up to be amazing adults!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Diane Linder who invited me to be co-owner of The Dance Co when I was 9 months pregnant!
Morgan Lightholder who was my partner for 18 years and said yes more than she said no. She has encouraged and supported me tirelessly.
My mom who took me to dance classes beginning at age 5 and has been to every dance recital since!
My husband who let me live my dream!
