Today we’d like to introduce you to Don Cody.
Don, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I always knew I was destined to become a performer. I started singing at a very young age. I grew up listening to country music. My favorites growing up were always George Strait, Garth Brooks and Brooks and Dunn. My parents/grandparents would film me singing along to music videos with my cowboy hat and guitar and thought it was the coolest thing ever. As I got older, I kind of hid behind my own shadow a bit. Somewhat of a loner, but subconsciously living in my own dream world, just having no idea how to get to there. I started goofing around making hip-hop music in my later high school years with some friends, and it oddly got a pretty decent response locally.
My first show ever was a mess! I had one verse in a song and it was just my family and friends that were in the crowd. After getting my feet wet with a few smaller shows, I was thinking about throwing in the towel but I was invited to perform on a couple of dates of the “All I Wanna Do” tour with T. Mills (now MTV’s “Ghosted” Travis Mills and Blackbear. To this day, I believe that was the turning point for me. Controlling a sold-out live audience every night really lit the fire that I needed to pursue this to the moon. Fast forward seven or so years, and here we are!
Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely not! Probably the bumpiest road imaginable! Over the past seven years, I’ve done this entirely independently (until this year). There has been plenty of false promises and high hopes that lead straight to let downs. I’ve also had a couple of close relatives to me pass away over time that I was heavily involved of caring for. Until this point, it’s almost been like I’d catch some good momentum just to have to deal with more hardships, ultimately having to reinvent/reintroduce myself each time I got back to it. But even during these hiatuses, I never backed down and never gave up hope. In time I knew my shot was coming. Now the world is finally getting to know who Don Cody really is.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I’m born and raised and currently reside in the SF Bay Area, but my manager is located down in Los Angeles so that may be the future move at some point. Unfortunately due to COVID-19, I haven’t been able to hop on the road and display my sound to different audiences this year, but I have been sharpening my sound and craft for when those times return. I’ve been working endlessly on fresh new sounds that are unique and will catch the listeners ear. I just released my first major single “School Picture Day” featuring LA-based Mod Sun. The numbers have been outstanding! In the first two weeks, we’re just shy of 100,000 streams in total!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next five years, I see myself being a big name in the music industry now that we have the ball rolling. I want to take advantage of every opportunity given to further my team and I up the industry ladder. I don’t plan on competing with anyone but myself because if you better yourself from the previous day, you’re way ahead of the game. At that ten years mark, I’ll be in my mid-30s, which is a little late to be jumping around on stage like an animal and making trendy songs for a young crowd. If all goes to plan up until that point, I can see myself getting into acting, hopefully starting a family. I also want to do a lot of charity work down the road once I’ve established a name for myself so I can really get my platform involved!
