Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Thomas.
Dominique, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in the Inland Empire. I have always been around health and fitness from a very young age. I began running track and field at four years old. My sisters were already running, so I guess my parents thought it would be a good idea to put me in it as well. As a child my parents always instilled in me the importance of overall health. It was important to take care of yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually. I can reminisce on times we spent taking family runs, one on ones with my Dad about believing in myself, and attending church regularly. The core of me is a lot of what they taught me.
I ran track and field all the way up to college where I studied Kinesiology at Cal State Fullerton. I believe this is when my excitement for movement really took over. My focus was health and fitness promotion. I began to see all of the benefits of taking care of your body now instead of waiting for a negative diagnosis and then changing your bad habits. That is when my purpose “To get everyone up and moving” began.
In college is when my husband (at the time, finance) and I became pregnant with our first child. It was unexpected, but she definitely changed our lives forever. We now have three children together and have been married for 11 years. He continually motivates me, challenges me, and supports me to be my best. It also helps that he is heavily involved in the health and fitness industry as well. We work hard everyday to instill health, fitness, and wellness into our children’s lives just like my parents did for me. It has come full circle.
Fast-forwarding to a couple of years later, I created Well & Fit Coaching. I have worked at gyms both in the private and public sectors, and they all just focus on one thing which is physical health. I wanted to put my focus in helping people with their overall well-being (physically, mentally, and spiritually). I started off with group training and personal training. My goal was always to express gratitude after every workout and get my participants to think about more than just exercising.
Well & Fit Coaching has evolved into a hub for all things wellness. I am a personal trainer, wellness coach, speaker, author, and financial advisor. I host a weekly LIVE Instagram (@wellandfitcoaching) chat called POWERCLASS where we talk all things health, fitness, and wellness. My book, I AM WELL & FIT: Wellness Tips for the “Busy Adult” From a Fit Mom, gives my personal tips for improving your overall wellness. I help my clients reach their goals in fitness, nutrition, mental/emotional health, and now partnering with World Financial Group, I am helping them with their finances as well.
The vision of Well & Fit Coaching is to help each client achieve their own plan for optimal health from the inside out. We strive to explore your goals in the areas of fitness, nutrition, mental/emotional well-being, and finances. Using proven techniques and programs that will help you live your best life.
We live by our mantra, “LIVE. LOVE. WELL & FIT.”
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. The road has been one of highs and lows. I remember a time when I would think, “Does what I am doing really impact anyone?” I wanted to quit and just be a regular 9 to 5 employee. In the past year, I think I have been challenged the most. On May 22nd, 2019 I made the decision to walk away from my job working as a Wellness Educator for Riverside County and pursue Well & Fit Coaching on a full-time basis. I had never been so excited and scared all at the same time! I had to get used to not bringing in as much money as I used to. I’ve been exhausted and frustrated. I kept thinking, “What did you do?” My parents supported me, but I could tell they were worried with my decision. Other people had their opinions (good and bad), but I knew God was telling me to move in this direction. My husband supported me fully. I was miserable working that job, and I knew I was meant for something greater. We made a plan, stepped out on faith, and are doing it! Now I am coming up on my one year anniversary of being self-employed.
Well & Fit Coaching – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Well & Fit Coaching is a wellness company. We offer a total package to help the “whole” person (personal training, nutrition, mental/emotional well-being, and financial services). In addition, we have partner with Vanessa Alardo, RD and owner of Tripower Nutrition to offer easily accessible meal plans to the public. I am also available for speaking engagements. Topics include self-care, self-motivation, exercise, and overall well-being.
I specialize in exercise as well as health and fitness promotion. I am also becoming well versed in the financial industry under the guidance of my mentors Josh and Kathleen Polacek for World Financial Group.
I am most proud of the evolution of Well & Fit Coaching. At first, I didn’t know what I was doing. I just knew I had a passion for movement. There is power in movement. I see it every time I lead a crowd in a physical activity, play with my children, dance with my husband, or help a client reach their goals. I truly believe if we can just get people moving, it will lead to change. I love seeing people transform into healthy and happy individuals. If I just affect one person, I am doing my job!
I would say nothing really sets me apart from others. I feel like all of us have an opportunity to do what we truly love. There is passion and purpose inside of all of us. I have put a lot of hard work, prayer, and time into creating Well & Fit Coaching and all of its outlets. In addition, I also have an amazing support team of my husband, my family, close friends, and my mentors. I know with God, faith, and action others can do the same.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment thus far has been the relationships I have built. Also, when I see where someone has started to where they are now. To be able to affect change in someone’s life is truly amazing. When they go from not knowing much about how to take care of their overall well-being, to now reminding me (especially when I am down) of this wonderful life we have been given to live.
