Today we’d like to introduce you to Dipali Patel.
Hi Dipali, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Professionally, I am the owner of The Coder School – Redondo Beach/Torrance where we teach young students how to write computer software. Personally, I am 43 years old, divorced, single mom of two wonderful boys living in a complicated culture that has a hard time accepting strong women. I am a fitness lover, marathoner, and an entrepreneur. I am honored to be apart of the South East Asian community full of strong, successful women. Growing up, I’ve seen and heard a lot of gender inequalities. As the world is evolving, I aim to empower women of my culture to break those inequalities and create new standards of the modern woman.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There were numerous struggles along the way and some still exist. Being a single mom is never easy and running your own businesses are equally difficult. Managing everything and still staying on top of my health and wellness becomes very challenging at times. Before I discovered my own self-confidence, I always doubted my own abilities. I had less self-worth. I was surrounded by people who hindered my growth. I let all of that hold me back from how I truly felt and was capable of. Once I overcame that, I was able to see clearer and focus on myself and my goals.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow. I used to be a tech recruiter and was placing software developers into startups all across the nation, one synonymous comment they all had was that they wished there was a school around when they were younger. Coincidentally, when my own son expressed interest, and I was shocked to find that none existed around me. With growing up and spending time with friends in the South Bay community, I knew I had to bring something here. That’s when I knew my 2nd location would be somewhere that was meaningful to me.
We are a year-round, after-school enrichment program that teaches young students (ages 6-18) how to write computer software. We are part of a nationwide franchise with more than 55 locations. Coding is a basic literacy in the digital age, and it’s important for kids to understand the technology around them. Coding is the language of the future, and it fosters creativity, problem-solving, and logical thinking skills that transcend into any occupation. We teach a variety of programming languages and platforms, including Scratch (a graphical drag-and-drop programming environment that was developed by MIT), Python (a typed command-line language), HTML/CSS/JavaScript (for creating websites), Java, C, C++, C# and PHP. We also teach a variety of platforms, including SWIFT (which is used for apps for iPhone and iPad) and Unity (which is a 3-D Game Development platform).
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
If you’re just starting out in your career or business, invest all your time and focus to it. Do your due diliengce and give it your all. Hard work also comes with a price and many sacrifices, but if you stay true to your craft and passion, you will see your goals come to fruition. All else will fall into place.
