Meet Dino Presutto of Orange County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dino Presutto.

Hi Dino, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started in the mid 1970″s, working for my father’s tile contracting and retail store. I learned how to grout, mix cement, bid and sell jobs, as well as supervising them through completion. Around twelve years old, I was riding my bike to the park and I saw 2 homes being built and realized I wanted and though it would be cool to be a builder.
I wanted to become a general contractor, so I got a job working for a general contractor who did kitchen and bath remodels and who also happened to be a US Marine. He taught me how to do plumbing, electrical, drywall, hang doors, do molding, cabinets, and window installation. He would send me to the attic in the heat of the day so I would work faster, and under the house in the morning when it was cold and damp. He taught me the “get it done” attitude without complaining. Once I had the experience of remodeling kitchens and baths under him, I was licensed and wanted to move on to room additions and building homes. I became a cabinet installer for Sears kitchen and bathroom remodeling. I started advertising for room additions, and the next thing I knew, I was building homes for the HUD program and private citizens in Santa Fe Springs, South Gate, Whittier, and the Downey areas. As I was building, I realized that architectural plans were not cost-effective, and the use of space was not efficient. So during construction, I would make necessary changes and then started designing and drafting my own home and remodeling plans. Today, I still meet with clients and create a design for them and their families, keeping in mind all that I learned over the last 40+ years and keeping true to who I was back then.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The only struggles are keeping up with new building codes, regulations (red tape), and the rising cost increases for my customers.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have to be able to listen to my client’s needs and interpret what they are trying to achieve in their project, all while trying to keep within a budget. The most imp0rtant thing is to try to give them what they want within the allowable space I have to work with. How I differ from other builders is, I can walk into a space and see what needs to be moved, torn down, or relocated in my head before any words are spoken. Mainly because I never took off my construction boots and know how to frame and know how walls are supported from actually doing the physical work myself for all these years. I am most proud to say, I am not a paper contractor, which means that I can perform any part of construction, from foundation, concrete, plumbing, framing, to laying tile, all because I’ve done it myself. I have 3 contracting licences in California and 1 in Arizona.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
The company does complete “turn-key” projects. Which means, we do the design, picking out materials and finishes all the way though the build and hand over the keys to the front door.
