Meet Dimi Sesson II of Midi Jones in Toluca Lake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dimi Sesson II.

Dimi, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I got started when I was 17, I always made music for fun growing up but honestly never planned on making it a profession. I’m half Austrian and spent time growing up over there with my mom and brother, where I learned how to play trumpet and got a bit of formal music education. I ended up moving back to the states with my dad and brother right before I turned 17 and my dad got sick and we lost our apartment. That’s what mainly drove me to pursue music because it really felt like my only way to get out of that situation.

One of my dad’s friends ended up playing my music for Kerry Gordy who’s the son of the founder of Motown Records, Berry Gordy. Both Kerry and Berry Gordy mentored me and gave me a credible start in music. Alongside them, sone of my great friends Josh Cocktail, Jayme Silverstein, my amazing manager Spencer Bistricer, and my incredible mentor Jon Levine to name a few. They’ve all helped me get to where I am and I wouldn’t be here without them.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s definitely been less than smooth but I feel fortunate than most because of the lessons I learned along the way. I didn’t formally graduate high school which made trying to get a job and make money while pursuing a way to break into the music industry more than a little challenging. After losing our apartment it took years of crashing at random studios and friends places around LA before I could afford my own place. I used to sell my blood three times a week to keep my phone on so I could get calls for gigs. I’ve signed bad deals and got into business with people that didn’t have my best interests at heart and it’s put me back at square one more times than I care to admit. I got my first major-label single without having an address, which was bitter/sweet. The bright side is I’ve made life long connections with people I know I can count on, people I could lean on during those times that made it more than worth going through. The things I picked up along the way I could’ve never paid to learn.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I’m a music producer based in Toluca Lake, I specialize in making custom music for indie and label artists. I pride myself most on working as hard as I can to make my clients satisfied with the results and making the process as enjoyable for everyone involved as I can. I always do my best to make sure what we work on ends up being the client’s favorite regardless on whether its a low indie rate or a label rate. I view this less as a job and more as a way to leave behind something enjoyable for everyone that enjoys music and everyone that’s apart of the process.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I’m already seeing a big shift regarding the nature of the music industry, how we get paid, how we market ourselves, and how we’re reaching our audiences. I think in ten years everything will be even more social media focused and a lot more focused on building a true fan base for artists, I think having an identity as an artist will be more important than ever which excites me as someone who wants to leave a unique mark with the artists I work with.
