Meet Diane Dawson of German Shepherd Rescue Burbank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diane Dawson.

Diane, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My employer, Universal Studios, encouraged me to get involved with helping my Community. After adopting a German Shepherd, I decided to start volunteering at a local Dog Rescue. My journey began in 2001. I would do various things like walking dogs, cleaning kennels and attending adoption events. As time progressed I became more involved with the rescue. I became a volunteer recruiter and embraced the many facets it takes to run a rescue. I have bailed out many dogs out of high kill shelter and became a fundraiser then manager. Embracing the new age of technology, I helped the Rescue become more visible through social media. I helped the rescue partner with the NKLA Coalition to help Los Angeles become a no kill city.

Has it been a smooth road?
There have been many struggles along the way. There were periods of times when donations would decrease and we would need to regroup to fundraise. We get difficult case dogs that have unique medical needs such as epilepsy so I am constantly seeking solutions to help the dogs get better and spending countless hours at Vet offices.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
This Rescue is the first pure bred specific organization created in Southern California. Back in the nineties, it started a trend which continues today. It is unique because it deals with German Shepherds. We are proud to say we have helped save thousands of dogs’ lives.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, Los Angeles embraces helping Rescues. It encourages and nurtures this type of business.
