Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Adams.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My story is a compilation of various events, I’ve always been an artist ever since I could remember but never believed my natural talent could make solid a career. While working my current job in the interior design field, I saw first-hand real artists making it work. We hired muralist to do hand-painted wallcovering, ceramists, sculptors, glass blowers, all artists from various fields. It was empowering and essential to push me to follow my dreams and make it work.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
If the road is too smooth, then you’re not pushing hard enough. I’ve ran into various hurdles. Just learning the business and operations side is challenging for me. When you’re the creative, all you want to do is create, so it was definitely challenging to stop creating, and make sure you’re profiting, and representing yourself in the right light.
To be honest, I’m currently struggling at the moment. The last four weeks, during the BLM movement, has been unbelievable. With everyone working together and sharing black-owned businesses, I’ve gotten a surge of followers and sales. I am currently completely sold out and simply can’t satisfy the demand. Yes, it’s a great problem to have, but I need to stay focused in only taking on what I can and learning when and how to say No.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am SampleHAUS, a company that creatively up-cycles interior design waste into eclectic home decor. Since I work for an interior designer, I’m surrounded by beautiful fabrics and other materials. However, a majority is thrown away, due to items being discontinued, or excess fabrics and can’t be used in the project. I began collecting these excess materials and SampleHAUS was created.
Not everything has recycled material, I also make everyday pottery, like planters, cups, accessories, and many more to come!
Save your scraps, challenge yourself, and make something cool. The Earth will thank you.
What were you like growing up?
I was always the odd one in the bunch. Very introverted, still am. Being a black girl growing up in south-central who listened to rock music and watch anime, was very interesting to say the least.
