Meet Devon Spence of Kuja Studios in Downtown LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devon Spence.

Devon, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have worked as a successful model for over 9 years and continue to grow the number of fashion brands I work with. I picked up photography along the way more so to grow my own modeling brand. I also work as an actor and cinematographer having just finished filming my 3rd short film as a DP. I love to create and love to help others bloom in their own creativity. Originally, I got an open space in downtown to study my scripts and work on my photography. It has grown into a fully equipped photo/video studio where we have had some of the biggest celebrities and clients produce work. I’m grateful to have a space I can share with others where we all work together to create works of art.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would love to say it has been smooth, but it’s about 50/50 with the struggles I’ve had to face. I knew nothing about starting up a business. Lucky for me one of my best friends is a successful business man who works with big name talents in the industry. He helped get me started and my family has been here to support me. My mom helps me with the numbers, my brother greets the guests, and I get to learn more about all the gear out there. I’ve never used so many word documents, spreadsheets, software programs, and note pads as I have running my business now. There is always room for improvement. The biggest struggle I run into is not being here myself to greet guests when I fly out for modeling. The team is growing and we face every challenge with the mindset of how much more we will learn and grow when we overcome these challenges.

Please tell us about Kuja Studios.
Kuja Studios is primarily a photography and video studio specializing in fashion. I am the face of the company and my job is to make sure our clients’ production moves efficiently. We are known for having a strong platform were artists can come to create and grow their talents and take their brands to the next level. I’m most proud of our custom Hair and Make Up station. Not only is everyone excited about its simplicity, but I did not realize it would become every guest favorite place to take selfies. I think the biggest asset we have at our studio is the convenience to use all the natural light we have or pull the shades and use all the photography gear. What sets us apart is our above and beyond customer service. We are your friend here rather than just a business.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite memories from childhood was when I would hang out with my long-time friend Sion and we would climb trees. Once we climbed up about 30ft and just jumped to see if the vines would catch us. We were and still are adrenaline junkies and luckily the vines did catch us. I can still see myself swinging upside down 4 ft from the ground with the vines wrapped around my leg.
