Meet Devlyn Gorby

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devlyn Gorby.

Devlyn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
From the time I was a teenager, I enjoyed shopping with my friends/family and picking out flattering and stylish clothing for them. The people I helped would frequently report back to me with stories of the resulting compliments and their increased self esteem. By the late nineties I began to devise a plan to turn my drive for helping women dress more stylishly and make a difference in their lives by providing a “makeover” service that would enhance their individual coloring and physique. I completed a 100 hour certification course provided by a well known and popular personal stylist/color consultant. She trained me to discern the proper palette to beautify my client’s complexions and the correct cuts/styles of clothing for their unique body types, based on their vertical proportions. With that qualification, I proceeded to teach these principles to groups of women in a class setting that included fun and lively audience participation. As time progressed, the popularity of color analysis decreased and the desire to hire professionals for personal shopping and closet auditing became the services people are most interested in. I made adjustments to my offering, and these are now the two main services I provide. Based on my training, I always share individualized instruction on color/body type with my clients, in order to give them the most well-rounded and informative experience possible, whether it’s during a personal shopping spree, or in-home closet audit.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Some clients have strict requirements or limitations I must work around. For instance, covering certain body parts, like upper arms or legs… or a dislike for entire categories of clothing (i.e., shorts, pants, skirts, shoes with high heels) or particular colors/patterns, etc. Others may have an unrealistically negative view of their appearance, which can result in a highly emotional setting and can be a challenge to help them overcome.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
