Today we’d like to introduce you to Destany and Efrain Matias.
Hi Destany and Efrain, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m DestanySilverback and welcome to Silverback Audio, a Private Recording Studio and Educational Facility in Burbank, CA. Silverback Audio values completion and quality. My husband, known as Silverback, is a producer and engineer. We started Silverback Audio in our San Diego living room in 2019. After gaining popularity and consistent clientele, we built out our first commercial studio space in San Diego in October 2019. While Silverback completed over 300 songs during 2020, I was helping our artists turn their brands and clout into legitimate businesses. After gaining more traction online, we decided in June 2021 to move the studio to its current location just outside Hollywood in Burbank, CA. In 2022 we are considered one of the 7 Best Recording Studios in Burbank and serve as a Recording Connection Mentor Location where we teach their Advanced Audio Engineering and Production curriculums. Following suit as our old mentor Bernard “IQue” Johnson, we educate students on the importance of entrepreneurship in the music and media industries.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road at all. Our plans were always to grow our studio, invest in real estate and move to LA when I got out of the Military. Covid made that process very difficult when I got out in April 2020. We had to commute from Phoenix while looking for a home closer to LA. We were still holding studio sessions in San Diego; it’s a 6-hour commute. During that time, we found the home we wanted, it was only an hour from LA and 3 hours from San Diego. We felt uncomfortable uprooting our business in uncertain times like the pandemic. So, we spent a year commuting three hours every week to work 14 hours a day with our clients to complete songs and help brands in San Diego. It’s been great since moving everything to LA mid 2021. There are still random hiccups and adjustments, but we adapt and overcome any changes and challenges. We understood from the beginning that the Music and Media industries are tough and challenges are inevitable. Owning real estate so far away complicated things, but in order for us to expand and survive our transition into a new city, we had to be ready to start over and learn. Accepting that made it easier for us to have an optimistic and open-minded outlook along this journey.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Silverback Audio is very community-oriented. We are great at what we do and don’t simply push people out the door. We differ from other studios for various reasons, the first from our flexible workflow and creative approach to cutting records for artists. Second being that we partner with Recording Connection and help mentor their students for their college program.
Since Silverback has advanced expertise, our workflow can differ from other studios. We have the ability to record, rough mix, and master songs in one session. A song that we completed in 45 minutes, called Hood Livin by Jubiee D, sits at about 2 Million views on YouTube. Most of our artists generate tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of views per song.
A third reason why Silverback Audio differs from other studios is that we have DestanySilverback. DestanySilverback has extensive experience working with brands of many industries but specializes in the music business. Destany started offering her services in San Diego, where she helped Silverback and many of his clients develop brand strategies, become legal businesses and secure funding. Since moving to LA, she now works providing business solutions and growth/expansion plans.
How do you think about happiness?
As a Veteran, helping people and being of service make us happiest. We love adding value and providing a quality experience. We find innovation fun and spend lots of time researching more ways to expand. Our favorite part is that we get to work together every day doing what we’re most passionate about. As a family, our marriage has grown alongside our businesses, and we’ve developed together yet separately in our own niches.
