Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree Brown.
Desiree, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been a people connector, and I’m most fulfilled helping others with their life journey. I grew up in Southern California and have been involved in community service my whole life. I’m a proud mom, with a son in high school and daughter in middle school, and grateful to have developed three diverse income streams around my passions.
My career as a recruiter began in the 90’s at Nelson Staffing in San Francisco, where I lived for 13 years after college. In those days, I worked with candidates directly, and discovered I was passionate about helping people define their career paths. I was honored to manage a team who shared my passion, and together we grew into an award-winning division. In 1996, I married my husband Chris, a technology pioneer who worked in Silicon Valley and evangelized, created and produced advanced features for Hollywood DVDs. In 2000, we moved south and settled at the beach. Nelson didn’t have a southern California office yet, so I took time off and we started our family. I’m now back at Nelson, as the business development manager for Los Angeles. My position enables me to help companies find top-notch talent through our awesome recruiting team in administration, accounting, technology and engineering.
About 3 years ago, a friend introduced me to the Healthy Living app from the non-profit Environmental Working Group (EWG). This app rates products for safety, and it was incredible to learn how many toxins are in everyday products. Our skin is our largest organ, and everything we put on it is absorbed within seconds. Unfortunately, most people are unaware of the danger, and the US has very poor regulation in this area. I became passionate about spreading this message, and started seeking, advocating and selling safer products through Beauty counter. As an independent director, I get to educate others and help them choose safer products. I also mentor people who want to start their own business doing the same thing. It is gratifying to offer skincare, makeup and personal care that is absolutely safe for the whole family, and also award-winning & high-performing. My favorite part is sharing it with others. I love to get women together to share the safety message & sample the products. I participate in various charity events, such as children’s theater, school fundraisers and so on. I also enjoy partnering with service providers (such as photographers, hairstylists, health & fitness businesses, shop owners, and others). I’ve done lots of fun themes like Girls or Moms Night Out, Mother/Daughter events, Makeup & Mimosa parties and more.
My third business I run with my husband Chris. We are both founding independent affiliates and advocates for the best CBD/hemp oil on the planet. I have personally benefitted from Cannabidiol (CBD), and witnessed the profound health effects in my family and our community. It’s become our anxiety/stress/pain relief in a bottle! CBD has helped many people of all ages get off of dangerous medications. We host tasting get-togethers, educate people about cannabis and CBD, and help people sell it legally anywhere in the USA (and soon in Asia and other parts of the world). We love being a part of the worldwide “green rush” to reintroduce the health benefits of cannabis back into our daily diets, as it once was. Search the web for your ailment + CBD and see how it might help you.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As Jerry Garcia sang, “what a long, strange trip it’s been.” LOL! No, the road has not been smooth for a while it was. After leaving San Francisco my husband’s career grew alongside the growth of DVD, which allowed me to be a stay-at-home mom. I am forever grateful for the time I had with my children in their early years. I volunteered at their preschool and community projects and joined the local Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club to help start a new chapter on the Loyola Marymount University campus.
In 2005, Chris and I formed a startup to help the studios launch Blu-ray Disc and the first media apps for iPhone and Android. Life was good. Then the 2008 financial crisis hit and the market changed, and—at the same time—I was diagnosed with a rare auto-immune disease that needed expensive medicine. By 2011 it was clear I needed to bring in other income. I started selling skincare to help make ends meet and three years later found Beauty counter, then three years after that returned to Nelson. I never thought I’d be back full-time in the corporate world but I’m having a blast at a fantastic company that is fun, works with integrity, and gives back to the community.
Please tell us about Nelson & Associates, Beauty counter, PrimeMyBody.
I love the fact that I can work with and potentially help anybody. If you are a business looking to fill an opening, or someone who is looking for a job, or if you have skin, or you have an endocannabinoid system (which is everyone), then let’s talk!
What I’m most proud of as a brand? I’ve always tried to be helpful, informed & honest with the highest integrity. My goal is to have these qualities shine through in everything I do.
