Meet Derick Cook of DJCookBeats in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Derick Cook.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been involved with music. Starting at a young age, my father introduced me into producing my own music. Even though I had no idea what I was doing I was just a kid having fun. Throughout Jr. High- High School I found myself playing in Punk Rock bands with my cousins, learning how to produce on FL Studio and being known as the kid who can rock a party just by using my iPod! Haha

Fast forward ten years later I’ve now made a name for myself in my small home town of Newark, CA. Although I love my city, the people and most of all my family, I know the only way to take my music career to the next level is to make a move. So as the summer of 2018 was coming to an end myself and my friends (who also make music) decided by 2019 we need to make that big jump and move out to Los Angeles. It was a tough move, leaving all my family, friends and of course a steady paycheck working a 9-5 but I know there’s so much more for me out here in LA. I’ve always told myself I need to at least try and pursue my dream just to say ‘hey at least gave it a shot’ rather living with regrets.

I’ve now lived in Los Angeles as of February of 2019. I’m constantly booking gigs throughout the city and being featured on multiple music outlets such as RnBass and Traklife Radio. I’m also now a resident DJ for JOEY Woodland Hills and now have my own show called ‘The RnB Mix Show with DJ CookBeats’ on DASH Radio. Which is aired three times a week on the Boomerang Station founded by Boy’s II Men very own Shawn Stockman. I’m extremely blessed of what I’ve accomplished as of late but I know I need to continue to work hard to get to where I want to be. And in the midst of all that hopefully set an example and give some motivation for that kid back home to go and chase that dream.

Has it been a smooth road?
I feel like we all go through a period of time where you’re not able to concentrate fully on your dreams and passion. Which is okay because those experiences build character. I’m a strong believer in ‘beauty in the struggle’.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m a DJ and Music Producer. My first love will always be making my own music because thats what started everything for me. But with DJing I’ve met a lot of cool people and most of all make my name a full on business. Getting booked for birthday parties, clubs and other private events have been a good way for me to connect with people in ways I could have never imagined. I feel my main job as a DJ is to make people feel good and hopefully help them have a memorable experience. I think what sets me apart from other DJ’s is my range of music I play. I love mixing all different types of genres and generations of music. My main purpose for this because I’m trying to make connection with everyone.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I feel like DJing and even Music Producing is on a whole new level. We have music festivals throughout the world and people pay top dollar to see there favorite DJ or producer. I honestly feel the sky’s the limit and I can only imagine how much bigger my industry will get. It may be harder to stand out from others but that just means the bar will continue to be set higher and higher for the next generation.
