Meet Deonis “Pumah” Cook of PadKat Music™

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deonis “Pumah” Cook.

Deonis, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been doing music since the age of four. Professionally, I’ve been in the industry since the age of 14. I was signed to a record deal to RCA through a local Dallas label. Nothing materialized from the deal, but during my time there, I became very interested in music and vocal production as well as writing.

I started focusing more on that than being an artist. Three years later, I became a member of the multi-platinum Grammy award-winning gospel choir God’s Property. My time there led to many more opportunities and learning experiences which have followed me to where I am today!

Working with artists such as Jill Scott, Ice Cube, Tori Kelly, Demi Lovato, Musiq, Dave Hollister, and even my group TEN from the acapella vocal show NBC’s “The Sing-Off,” has all linked back to me joining that choir! It was my foundation! I carry it with me where ever I go!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think any road (career) has a smooth path. You learn to weather the many storms as you go and grow. Everything from broken promises, mounds upon mounds of “no’s,” a failed marriage, self-doubt, wack equipment, and a PLETHORA of other circumstances made my cross heavy! But it was for something greater! That’s not to say I still don’t have struggles. Oh yes!! They don’t go away. As I stated before you learn how to weather them as you go and grow.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with PadKat Music™ – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My business is an entertainment/production company where I offer my services in artistry, writing, music and vocal production, and backing vocals for a major artist. I’d say what I hang my hat on most is the consistent quality of the product I present.

What sets me apart from the rest is that I’m a perfectionist. If I don’t feel the product is something I would buy or entertain, I wouldn’t dare give it to a potential client.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Right now, I’m looking to produce and write for more mainstream artist and eventually take on the “label’ status. I would like to start off with two artists which would intel artist development.

I think that’s something that’s missing in today’s industry. You have many artists with no sustainable shelf life. A lot of that is due to not being taught what to do BEFORE you achieve the success you want. It’s easy to become. It’s harder to retain.
