Today we’d like to introduce you to Dennis Buckley.
Dennis, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In 1985, I was working in the grocery industry and injured my back. I started seeing a chiropractor and it helped me tremendously not only with the injury but in the direction of my life personally and professionally. I started running and ran a marathon. I started back to school taking classes after my girlfriend broke up with me on my birthday. One day in 1986 my chiropractor asked me what I was going to school for. I did not know. He suggested I become a chiropractor. That day I contacted two local chiropractic colleges and visited one. It seemed the going back to school, running and injuring my back actually all were orchestrating my becoming a chiropractor and that day I decided. I worked full-time and went to school full time to enter Los Angeles College of Chiropractic in Whittier in January 1990. I was very involved in school becoming student body president and graduating Magna sun laude in April 1993. I started practicing as a licensed chiropractic in August 1993 almost 8 years to the day of starting back to school. I practice at Budincich Chiropractic for 11 years. I joined my alma mater as a clinician at their new health clinic in Pasadena and practiced there from June 2003 to February 2009. In March one of the other clinicians, Dr. Miwa Yoshida and myself took over the clinic as owners and Health Advantage Health & Wellness Center opened and grew over the next 5 years serving the greater Los Angeles area with chiropractic, acupuncture, and massage winning best of awards in the San Gabriel Valley. In January of 2015, we transformed our practice to an integrated model blending safe, effective and affordable services such as trigger point injections, joint injections, rehab, decompression, genetic testing and other treatments to help people regain, retain and optimize their health. Health Advantage Physical Medicine and Buckley Yoshida Management launched. Now two years into this new venture the practice has increased 2 fold and serves more and more people creating a “one-stop-shop” for neuromuscular and wellness care. The success of the practice started back in 2003 with lots of personal services, outreach into the community, patient advocacy and teaching patients how to take care of themselves so that problems can be prevented. I was very involved in my profession and the community serving in many capacities such as President of the California Chiropractic Association in 2004-2005 and Chairman of The Board of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce. I also served as team doctor for many high schools and serves on the board of the National Football Foundation, San Gabriel Valley Chapter. Being involved and being connected has been the source of success for me personally and professionally. Relations, creating them and nurturing them builds trust and connection equity. This has made all the difference.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been highs and lows. but they all served a purpose. In December of 2008, we were notified that the school was closing the clinic where we were clinicians. Essentially we would be unemployed in 60 days. But out of that was an opportunity to take over the clinic privately. That was a great opportunity. With a dedicated team and shear determination, we made it work.
Learning how to build a practice was quite a struggle. In 199e chiropractic was still viewed skeptically and it was an uphill battle but by believing in my product, service, and talent and with wonderful mentorship that hurdle was crossed and led to great success
