Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Wiesner.
Denise, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been in practice as a Chinese Medicine Practitioner for 23 years. I started as an exercise physiologist with a degree from UCLA and worked in that field for ten years.
I began having digestive symptoms and started seeing an acupuncturist. That changed my life. Western medicine could not help me, but Chinese medicine not only helped my symptoms but looked at me as a whole person and not just as an intestinal tract.
I began to study Chinese Medicine at Emperor’s college in Santa Monica and spent three and a half months studying and treating in Shanghai, China.
Women’s health has always fascinated me. After having struggles with my own fertility, I began to seek the help of natural medicine. At the time, there was a great divide between Western and Eastern medicine and it was that struggle that prompted me to specialize in Fertility. In my practice now I treat both women and men. I also treat many other conditions that respond wonderfully with Eastern medicine including pain, digestive symptoms and autoimmune conditions.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Is life ever a smooth road for any of us? Life is always full of challenges and that is why we grow and change, and we learn to see the beauty everywhere. In January 2013 my husband, business partner and father of my two children died of Cancer. He had a sarcoma, which is a connective tissue cancer, in his hamstring that spread to his lungs.
He was an acupuncturist, too and, oddly enough, specialized in treating patients with Cancer with Chinese Medicine, which I also treat.
Of course that was the grand challenge and the rest of the challenges along the way just don’t seem to carry that much weight anymore.
Please tell us about Natural Healing & Acupuncture.
I am the owner and founder of Natural Healing and Acupuncture in West LA. At my clinic we treat the whole person, mind, body and spirit. What that means is we look at diet, exercise, stress levels and make recommendations that, not only include acupuncture, but massage, herbs, supplements, and relaxation tools.
I specialize in Fertility and Women’s health. I am one of the first to be certified by ABORM (American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine). I teach doctoral students at an Acupuncture college in the field of women’s health and reproduction and am a part of the Fertile Soul, a group run by Randine Lewis, author of “The Infertility Cure.”
My patients say that I provide them with not only physical support but emotional support, as well. They feel comfortable sharing with me their sexual concerns that might be impeding their fertility, because I also specialize in men’s and women’s sexual health. My clinic is like a home away from home where patients can let go, relax and be taken care of.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
One of my philosophies in life is that everything I have done has gotten me to where I am now. I would not change anything. I don’t like to go backward. I like to live in the moment and appreciate my friends, family and community. I am grateful for all lessons in my life.
