Today we’d like to introduce you to Delise’Ana Parker.
Delise’Ana, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a kid, I wore hand-me-downs from my older sisters. The clothes were a little too big for me. My brother bought me a kid’s sewing machine for Christmas. I taught myself how to use the machine, and I began to alter the clothes I was given. I loved that sewing machine. I had no idea that gift would change my life forever. I was voted most creative student in high school because I was known for creating my own clothing.
After graduating high school, I attended South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, South Carolina. I majored in Business Marketing. I opened a small boutique my junior year of college where I specialized in custom prom dresses, wedding gowns, and special occasion garments.
After graduating college, I knew I wanted to expand my business, and I knew I would have to relocate in order to do that… I applied for design school in Los Angeles California. I did not tell my family I was planning on moving, because I did not want them to talk me out of it. When I was accepted to the design school, I purchased a one-way ticket to Los Angeles California. I’d never visited Los Angeles, but my dream would not let fear overcome my decision.
Two weeks before my flight I told my parents and family, I was moving to Los Angeles. It was an emotional day and an emotional decision, but I’m glad I decided to follow my dream.
Has it been a smooth road?
Moving to Los Angeles from South Carolina in pursuit of my dreams was definitely not smooth road. I had never been without my family, so I had to learn how to survive on my own. I have experienced many obstacles including homelessness, decision making as far as my business, faulty partnerships, etc. No matter what I went through or am going through, the journey only made me stronger and pushed me to be more creative and better myself.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Delise’Ana Custom Designs – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a fashion and costume designer based in Los Angeles California. The name of my line is Delise’Ana Custom Designs. I have a small sewing space in downtown LA. I specialize in custom clothing and performance pieces for music artists. My clothes have been worn by celebrities such as Nicki Minaj, Faith Evans, Karen Civil, Lizzo, Danai Gurira from Black Panther and The Walking Dead, K. Michelle, and many more .
My clothes have also been featured in LA weekly, Glamour, Elle, Paper, Schon, Rogue, Gay times, and many more.
I am most known for creating wearable art and high fashion garments. My designs usually feature unconventional fabrics and geometrical shapes. This also sets me apart from other custom clothing companies.
I am proud and humbled by quite a few my accomplishments as a designer and business owner. I’m always thrilled when celebrities wear my clothing. I make each piece custom, so every design is made with passion. When I see my garments photographed or worn on the red carpet or in music videos, I always remember the moment I started sketching, or the moment I found the fabric. It’s so gratifying to see the pieces come to life.
2019 has been full of pleasant surprises and blessings. I achieved one of my life goals of showcasing my collection at Paris Fashion Week. On September 27th, 2019. The show was held at the Eiffel tower in Paris France overlooking the entire city. I still get chills thinking of the moment. While in Paris, I also shot at historic landmarks. The most memorable were the Palace of Versailles and Du Louvre.
Another proud moment was when my custom ruffle jacket was worn by Roc Nation’s artist Nicole bus in her video Mr. Big Shot. The video debuted on a billboard in Times Square, so my jacket was featured on the billboard.
My future goal is to become a costume designer for Disney and Marvel films. I know my style and design aesthetic would be an asset to those feature films.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like the fact that Los Angeles is a city where people come to live their childhood dreams. This city offers multiple opportunities if you work hard and stay focused.
