Meet Deisy Garcia of Sweet Dazee in El Monte – San Gabriel Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deisy Garcia.

Deisy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My love of crafting derives from observing my family throughout my early childhood. I’d spend the evenings watching my mother cut and sew garments or create crochet accessories. I recall being fascinated by raiding my mom’s closet and going through towers of yarn bins to find the best colors to use for my next project. She always had the best range of colors, textures, and styles. As for my dad, he was always creating some sort of woodworking project for our house while both of my older sisters had a great talent for drawing and painting. Being the youngest in the family, I always aspired to be like my sisters and follow in their same creative footsteps.

Growing up in a creative household led me to pursue a creative career. I first began taking design and art classes in high school. That in turn inspired and pushed me towards a career in graphic design. I was able to attain my first full-time in-house design job right before graduating college. That is where I really evolved and honed my skill set. My work became my life, overly obsessing over colors, textures, graphics, and enjoying the problem-solving challenges of design. I even dabbled into product photography and styling which became another passion of mine. Fast forward five years later and that’s when I hit a creative wall. I felt really burned out and began to lose my drive for design, a common story amongst many other creatives. I tried different hobbies like hand lettering, crochet, and paper art. All of which were very fun, but felt like they were not fulfilling enough, I still needed something else.

Then Halloween rolled around and that’s when I created my first pair of pom pom earrings for a gypsy/fortune teller costume. I love dressing up and have always made it a tradition to incorporate something handmade. I wanted to add a fun accessory that would be as colorful as my outfit. From that day on the pom pom craze began! Although I’ve since rekindled my passion for design, there’s something quite gratifying that doesn’t compare to creating something tangible. Even more when I see others appreciating my crafts. It’s through my small business that I have also connected with other amazing artisans and creatives. I love the experience I’ve had through this journey and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have had a few challenges with the creative aspect of my shop, but that has been easy when compared to the business side. Creating a budget, developing marketing strategies, determining pricing, and maintaining a great organization system are all skills I’ve been learning to develop along the way. It’s taken a lot of work, trial and error, and late nights to keep my small shop running all while trying to balance a full-time job and make time to spend with loved ones.

I’ve learned tremendously from this journey and I am grateful for all the hardships that have come with it. Some months are better than others but the perseverance and growth I’ve experienced keep me motivated. Even more so when I see customers getting excited when they wear their new accessories – it’s the BEST feeling!

Please tell us about Sweet Dazee.
My business is called “Sweet Dazee”, and I’m known for creating handmade pom pom earrings using yarn. However, I’ve recently ventured out into using polymer clay and other materials to incorporate into my pom pom earrings and expand my line.

What I’m most proud of is getting to see others share the happiness that a little piece of my creativity can bring to them. I love how an accessory as simple as earrings can really elevate your mood and add a pop of color to your outfit. You can either wear them with a casual everyday outfit or dress them up. I take great pride and pour so much love into every pair of earrings that I make. Every set has their own unique personal touch and are meticulously handcrafted, which is something you can’t find at your regular corporate store.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory would have to be the times when I would spend the evenings with my mom while we were both crafting away on the kitchen table. As I was painting or drawing, I would attentively observe her magic as she would draw and cut fabric patterns for a garment. She would create beautiful elaborate pieces for my sisters and I, including handmade Halloween costumes! Aside from sewing, she had many other hobbies like crocheting, gardening, cooking, all of which helped nurture my creativity. I am very fortunate to have parents that always encouraged me to express myself creatively.
