Meet Deepti Gupta of Siblings Bakery in Ventura

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deepti Gupta.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. My love and passion for eating, admiring and baking cakes started really early on. My mom tells me that I started baking and cooking at the age of 4 and just a mere mention of cakes or desserts lit up my face. It still does to date 🙂 While growing up, my family couldn’t afford a lot of luxuries (yes, oven was a luxury). But my parents managed to build a make-shift oven for me by using oversized aluminum utensil with some manipulation of electrical wires. It not only worked but worked wonders. I proudly say that it was my most prized possession as a child and that is also how the love for baking became stronger and stronger. It was until much later when I decided to pursue education in French Patisserie at Le Cordon Bleu School in Pasadena, CA. It was my dad and my husband who encouraged me and helped enroll me to pursue my passion. However, most unfortunately, my dad passed away while I was still in the school. I completed my education with a distinction but I knew I was never going to bake again. It just became very painful with the memories. And most fortunately, my husband kept pushing me and it was not until my son’s first birthday, when my husband refused to buy a cake from outside and forced me to bake again. It was hard but I moved past the hurt and one cake led to another. Now it’s all about creating memories, one cake at a time……. I now own my bakery and we specialize in supplying scrumptious pastries to coffee shops and hotels and creating all occasion cakes and desserts.

Has it been a smooth road? The biggest struggle was to get past the hurt of losing my dad. I didn’t bake for 3 years. If it hadn’t been for my husband, I would have never been where I am today. I must say that I have a wonderful support system including my mom who unconditionally helps me as needed whether in the bakery itself or helping me with my son. The customers have been extremely supportive and I appreciate every customer’s business, big or small.

So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Siblings Bakery story. Tell us more about the business. I own and run a wholesale bakery. We supply to coffee shops and hotels and restaurants. Our list includes muffins, scones, breads, cookies, cakes, cinnamon rolls, bear claws etc. I cater to many companies and provide pastries and coffee service for their meetings and special occasions. I also make all occasion cakes such as birthday, retirement, bridal and baby showers and wedding cakes etc. Our product is so loved and appreciated by not only our coffee shop owners but the foot traffic that they get. Our pastries are fresh and we are constantly changing flavors to make it more fun. Also, we create flavors upon our customer suggestions and requests.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade? Expansion is definitely on my mind. I want to expand our list of wholesale customers. I am also working on developing a product that can hopefully be packaged and sold in bigger super markets. I also would like to expand to Farmer’s markets and fairs etc. I also would continue to make my cakes along this.
