Meet DeeCee Edwards of Pinkhouse in Inglewood

Today we’d like to introduce you to DeeCee Edwards.

DeeCee, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
For as long as I can remember I’ve always been an entertainer. My mom was a major influence in my development as an artist by encouraging me to perform at family gatherings, acting in plays, dancing, etc. It was in my young adulthood when I found my niche in comedy in my hometown of Boston. After honing in and evolving my craft a lifelong friend and I, Tonji Hampton aka “Ahmose”, decided to take a leap of faith and move to LA for the next steps in following our dreams. After a year of being in this city, not knowing anyone to begin with, we connected with a group of likeminded individuals and started our own production company known as PINKHOUSE PRODUCTIONS.

Initially coming here for comedy the focus was to connect with comedians, and I did. I produced my own comedy shows, an underground HIT “Henny and Chicken”, but realized that it was a task to find the same consistency and passion in others that I myself have. As I broadened my scope when it came to networking and connecting with other creatives with resources we didn’t always have access to, Ahmose and I finally had the courage and confidence to really dive into our childhood dreams of music.

Once exploring the topic of music we realized that we needed to bring something new to the table, that’s when we became PeaceGang. The beauty of the name is in the name itself, it’s an oxymoron and we describe it as “bringing peace with a gang mentality”. Discovering our own talents and opening our doors to other incredibly talented underground artists we were able to expand and welcome in Sully Dope and Lee Lemaaj.

In coming to LA I thought I would only be a comedian, but since being here and connecting with this chosen PINKHOUSE family I realize that I am so much more than that. I’ve unlocked a slew of talents and passions I posses from being a rapper to a manager, producer, businessman and all-around entrepreneur. Now, not only am I seeking opportunity to better myself I’m able to offer opportunity to others.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve experienced a lot in the time I’ve been here from wack work and living situations, fake friends, people joining and leaving PINKHOUSE and PeaceGang, all while trying to keep a stable mind has been tough to say the least. I think the most challenging of all wasn’t the tangibles, but me and my mind. Being away from home, from family and everything you know and love to feeling alone but surrounded by all you love to do has been the toughest. The self-doubt and questions adequacy would get in the way but having this amazing support system has helped me stay on track and pressing forward.

Please tell us about PINKHOUSE.
PINKHOUSE is the production company that has four specialties being art & fashion, film, music, and comedy. I am head of the comedy department so I lead the production of comedy shows such as “Henny & Chicken”. I am by no means limited to comedy, being one of the founding members of PINKHOUSE I have a hand in just about everything. I am a manager to other artists under the PH umbrella, always having eyes and ears peeled for performance opportunities and networking for the entire team. I am also a signed artist to my own label, and in this area I am truly a student, learning as much as I can to become a better artist myself.

Our pride resides in how far we’ve come as an independent company. We’ve gained traction with a loyal following, we’ve created a culture within the company of love, support and communication, we’ve been able to make an impact in our community by giving back, and as dope as we are, we’re pretty humble. I think all that we are sets us apart. We’re a young group ranging from 25-32 with values. We’re not just “trying to make it” our goal is to make a difference. We see a lot of artists today that have less focus on entertainment and more “look” and “trend” based artistry, while we focus on the experience of our audience. We want to ensure that when you come to a PH/PG show you leave with some of our heart that we left on the stage.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Summer 2010, I organized a dance/music group in the greater Boston area. That’s when my mom recognized my talent and helped me create my first LLC business at 16 years old.
