Meet Debra Weiss of Specks and Keeepings

Today we’d like to introduce you to Debra Weiss.

Debra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my business in 2001, I was a single mom of three girls and was working in the medical field. My degree was in textile design, and prior to college, I would sell my macrame near Venice beach. I watched my eldest daughter who was almost 16 at the time I started what was then called Rebe excel in art.

I felt that as a mother the most wonderful thing to show my girls was to follow your passion. The business has since taken many twists and turns, and at this point. I am a very small company designing, cutting and sewing clothing for everyday wear. I sell directly to the customer at craft fairs and online.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a challenge. I have been self-taught in both the business world and fashion.

The recession of 2008 made me look a little differently of what it really was that I wanted to create and put out into the world.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Specks and Keeepings – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in function and beauty. I create a line that can cross over genders and not specific to any age range. I design what I want to wear while walking in the city, riding Metro, traveling and in general just living.

It knows no season and not dependent on trend. I use lovely fabrics and wash and dry each one before cutting and sewing, creating a practical garment which only improves with wear and age.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I was born here almost 63 years ago, I did not like suburbia where I raised my kids. I love living in the city, getting around by foot or public transportation. I love the influx of art and great food.
