Meet Deborah Kagan in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Kagan.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Deborah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
2008 marked the shift into what you see now—the Deborah Kagan/Rock Your Mojo™ brand. For 12 years up to that point, I had a successful Feng Shui consulting business that included products, consulting and speaking. But there was a little voice that wouldn’t leave me alone pushing me to do ‘the women’s work.’ The majority of my Feng Shui clients were women and I noticed that personal development usually slipped into the consulting. The mode of Feng Shui is powerful and it focuses on empowerment through your environment. However, I saw there was a point that clients would hit. A plateau of sorts. And those moments needed something that was more like Feng Shui from the inside out.

I had the biggest shove from above when I attended the 10th anniversary of the VDay campaign in New Orleans that year. The campaign, founded by Eve Ensler, is dedicated to ending violence to women and girls; a cause near and dear to me. The voice was undeniable and the day I returned to LA I made the decision to start a women’s group out of my living room.

Very quickly, the group outgrew my living room and I got connected to a business mentor who helped me build out the brand and platform. This led me into the online world expanding the reach to women around the globe. I started with a few small teleclasses that quickly grew into online courses and personal mentoring. When women living in Australia, England, Germany, Japan, India, Egypt and other foreign countries enrolled in my courses and mentoring—I knew something was working and the content I created was ready to be implemented on a larger scale.

This led to producing an annual one day live event—Mojo180, writing and launching an Amazon Best Selling book in 2012 and hosting six online interview series dedicated to women’s empowerment.

Making the shift into supporting women in rockin’ their mojo has put all my skills under one umbrella and created a fun, always evolving business.

Has it been a smooth road?
One of my mentors said wise words to me years ago, “Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.” I didn’t like hearing that at first because it sounded like fun and pleasure wouldn’t be a part of life. However, when I realized that being at your edge is where the most potent growth occurs, I embraced it. That’s not to say I’ve always jumped for joy in the uncomfortable moments. I’m human too!

There are challenges all the time. It’s part of being in business. I prefer to see them as opportunities. One of the biggest ones was a few years ago when the entire world of online learning shifted. The level of saturation was at a peak and what was working, no longer did.

I’m a big believer in having coaches, mentors and surrounding yourself with people further along than you. So in the face of wondering will I be able to keep my business, I connected with a new mentor who assessed my business and pointed out two key areas I was missing. I followed his advice without any assurance it would work. I took the leap without any foreseeable net and backed it up with powerful action, faith and vision. And that’s when my business jumped to the next level of success and expansion.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
As a Speaker / Author / Mentor for women, the thing I’m most proud of is the consistent feedback that I walk my talk. Authenticity and integrity are founding principles of my business. Whether it’s being really raw and funny during a keynote talk or holding sacred space during the Rock Your Mojo Women’s Weekend™ for women to dig deep or asking the poignant questions of my clients in order to help set them free—these are the moments that bring me alive and remind me why I do what I do.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is a great place to be a solopreneur/entrepreneur. The resources, people and openness, especially to alternative thinking, are abundant here. There’s a natural energy and lifestyle here that pulls for creativity and powerful evolution. And let’s face it, the weather’s pretty good too!
