Today we’d like to introduce you to Dean Kim.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dean. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I first fell in love with baking while attending UC Berkeley for my undergraduate degree. I was working part-time at a local bagel store as a baker. I immediately fell in love with the smell of bagels. That’s when I knew I wanted to pursue baking instead of law school, and that’s how it all started. I attended the American Institute of Baking and the San Francisco Baking Institute to get a proper culinary education. I then moved down to Orange County and worked for Breads N Spreads. Several years later, with the support of my wife, I decided to open up my own shop and OC Baking was born.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Things were going pretty well. Of course, there are the usual challenges of owning your own business, but for the most part, I was very fortunate. Then COVID hit and it has been difficult. We lost a significant portion of our business overnight during the first shutdown. We have been slowly coming back, but everyday is new and different and we are doing what we can to survive.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about OC Baking Company – what should we know?
We are a wholesale bread supplier and we service restaurants, hotels, and event centers throughout Orange and LA County. We specialize in artisan bread, which includes loaves, hamburger buns, dinner rolls, baguettes, ciabatta, and hoagies and grinders, and more. I am proud of the quality, creativity, and customer service we provide. We believe that our customer service sets us apart from other bakeries.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I was brought up in a family with strong work ethic. I was taught to be resilient and to push through any adversity that came my way. I believe this strong work ethic combined with my pursuit of excellence has helped me to be where I am today.
