Today we’d like to introduce you to Davonte Green.
Davonte, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have spent many years working against adversity in the form of housing insecurity, a felonious charge to my criminal record, being a teenage father and experiencing the impacts of an inequitable education system. In spite of these perceived barriers, I have been able to develop transformational relationships with high-value men and women both professionally and personally.
As a professional, I have spent the majority of my career in nonprofit education. I worked with City Year Los Angeles and City Year Headquarters as a program manager, senior program manager, regional recruitment manager and regional recruitment director. Additionally, I am the co-owner of a real estate investment company and most importantly, I am the Founder and CEO of The Giants’ Den.
Although I have clearly found a way to positively progress forward into new spaces, I did not always feel supported or appreciated on the journey. I felt a sense of impostor syndrome in spaces that I clearly deserved to be in and at the same time, I felt ostracized or misunderstood by close family members and associates who chose a different, less ambitious route of career and lifestyle.
I decided that I would leverage my transformative relationships that I had developed over the years with Black men who were also blazing trails in family, career and community in order to build a strong support network for purpose-driven Black men.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has not been smooth, but it has been intentional and fulfilling. In my previous role as regional recruitment director, my main responsibility was to recruit qualified candidates to serve in the program. However, as the CEO of a new and growing organization, I realized that I could not only focus on one aspect of the business. Instead, I needed to have a general knowledge in all aspects of business. Some of those aspects include recruiting, marketing, operations, budgeting, event planning, member management, etc.
I now seek to collaborate with individuals who have expertise in the respected fields and I delegate accordingly.
Please tell us about The Giants’ Den.
The Giants’ Den is a private members social club for purpose-driven Black men. We provide access to a robust network of ambitious professionals as well as access to our physical co-working lounge intended to serve as a hub for collaboration among members. They enjoy independent and collaborative workspaces and amenities that support the needs of our members and their goals. Our goal is to identify high valued, purpose-driven Black men and connect them to a network of like-minded individuals in order to build personal and professional bonds that help to elevate our members to positively impact their families, communities and industries.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would have taken a few start-up business courses.
