Today we’d like to introduce you to David Ruelas.
Hi David, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Well, I started to draw at the age of seven, rip-up magazine pages, and try to draw them. I noticed very early on that I was better than everyone else in my class. The teacher and fellow students (friends) would encourage me to draw. By the time I was a teenager, I would spend a lot of time with my art teacher and he would teach me different drawing techniques.
After high school, I attend my local college and took a few more art classes. I then realized that being a fine-artist painter will be a hard life to maintain a living. At the time. I was going to a lot of dance-electro clubs and would get a lot of flyers on my car, and I really enjoyed the design and how the type & photographs mixed together.
After doing research, I found out it was graphic design. I looked into art schools and enrolled. By the end of my senior year, I landed an internship at Playboy. Keep in mind, I was still doing side-gigs as a freelancer mostly club flyers. My time at Playboy was fun. I learned a lot about teamwork and also had a chance to work with Hef. By my 5th year, I mastered the bunny head and it was time to explore new opportunities.
This leaves me in my current state, I always wanted to be self-sustained financially and creatively with no restrictions. So I have spent the past six years learning how to be a creative entrepreneur using a mix of skills in photography, design, painting, and art direction to help other businesses achieve greatness.
My goal now is to have a production studio, a creative team, and all the resources available to help others. Also, fulfill my creative practice personal & commercial.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I would say like anything else, it takes time to develop the skills and to figure out who I am. What I like and don’t like, who I should work with, and what actually fulfills me creatively. I have gotten a lot of NOs from people but I always just keep pushing. Now, I actually enjoy the struggle because I know that it will push me to be better!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Ruelas Creative and ViddStudios?
My business is a hands-on creative studio that specializes in multi-service brand strategy including Minimalist Art Direction, Graphic Design, Illustration, and Studio Photography. I’m is mostly known for photography and graphic design. I would say my style is a mix of punk/minimalist structures. I actually care about who I work with and how I can do my best to help their business.
How do you define success?
By achieving your goals!
