Meet David Robkin of Wingwalker Brewing in Monrovia

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Robkin.

David, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I spent 40 years in Los Angeles working behind the scenes in Theatre, Film, Television, Performance Art, Clubs, and finally, technology development/startups. I would occasionally find work in mainstream shows, but the bulk of my experience was in the ragged and seedy underbelly of the entertainment industry. After all of that, I found the opportunity to open a brewery with a physicist I met in tech startups. Today, I am just getting Wingwalker Brewing off on its own grand adventure–we’ve been open three months.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
An independent freelance life is never smooth. I have restarted my career path because of bank failures, key personnel abruptly beginning a gender reassignment process, mentors getting sudden divorces, strokes, accidents, and arrests. I have scaled down my ambitions in order to have health care, doggy daycare. And to fulfill probate obligations. What kind of details would you like to know?

Wingwalker Brewing – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from others?
Wingwalker brewing set out to build a community, I want to create the kind of energy and excitement that I found on the fringes of Hollywood in the 1980’s and ’90’s. A place where people can come together and know acceptance for themselves and their creativity. I am proud of the feeling we have created in the taproom, the quality of our products, and the support of our growing community.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I have had several proud professional moments, but talking about them is a little weedy. I am proudest of myself for learning to walk away from bad situations.
