Meet David Pierce of MIDCENTURYLA in North Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Pierce.

David – kick things off for us.  Tell us about how it all started.

MIDCENTURYLA was started in 2004 in Stockholm by myself and 2 of my close friends who are Swedes. Since then the business has expanded to Los Angeles where we import and sell mid-century modern vintage furniture, lighting, pottery, art and design from Sweden, Denmark and Northern Europe. We currently have 20,000 square feet of space in LA including our warehouse showroom in North Hollywood. We offer pieces from Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, the UK as well as American pieces.

All of our furniture is inspected, repaired, refinished and reupholstered as part of the selling price. As well we are collaborating with different artists/photographers to have an expansive and varied art offering. MIDCENTURYLA is one of the largest sellers of imported vintage mid-century furniture in the US.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Oh it has not been a smooth road at all. There have been so many obstacles and bumps along the way. We’ve pushed through our own inexperience, heavy competition for the furniture we buy in Europe (Japanese and Australian’s have been our largest competitors to purchasing), down economies as well as competition that has grown around us in LA. We’ve had a big name retail chain back out of an agreement to purchase from us that nearly wiped us out before we had even moved to LA. All of these things are a part of the path of a small business, forcing you to change your business in order to survive.

We’ve been very fortunate as a small business and our clients have been loyal and helped us grow.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with MIDCENTURYLA – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
MIDCENTURYLA specialized in European/Scandinavian and American mid-century modern vintage original furniture, lighting, pottery, art, rugs and design. We are known for our huge selection, our client service + experience and for treating our customers honestly and with genuine care.

What sets us apart from others is the vast inventory we have, the size of our showroom/warehouse, the quality of our refinishing/upholstery and the level of customer care and experience we offer.

I am most proud of how we treat our customers.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are currently working on an additional 2600 sq. foot showroom that we are opening with one of my original Swedish partners that is called The Swedish Supply Store. It will offer very accessibly priced vintage goods along with new products from Sweden and abroad, all sold with a very Swedish vibe to the showroom. As well we will be expanding the line of new furniture we produce and we will continue to grow our photography and art program that we’ve been developing for 4 years now.

Pricing:

  • We offer pieces at most price points, from $900 sideboards to $1800 sofas all the way up to $6500 sideboards and $5000 sofas.
