Meet David Odell of Odell Complete Concrete in Orange County

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Odell.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born Long Beach, CA. I got started in building very early in middle school. I liked building different projects and was elected as shop foreman in both classes of wood shop and metal shop.

My father was a concrete contractor at the time, so I would occasionally work with him. I found it to be fun, rewarding, and challenging, and to this day I still feel the same way.

By the time I was 18 years old, I was working full time in my father’s business.

By the time I was 26, I had my Contractors license in 1991.

The economy was down around this time so I moved to Las Vegas, NV. When I got there it was amazing, all the building going on everywhere you looked. I stayed in Las Vegas for 10 years working for multiple contractors, from underground plumbers and electrical, landscaping, decorative concrete and commercial concrete.

All the companies I worked for, I did well enough to become either a foreman or superintendent.

By this point, I decided to go back to California where it all started. Basically, I wanted to get out of the harsh environment. I missed the ocean.

I came back to the Orange County area. By this time, my California Contractors License had expired, so I had to take the license test, business and law again in order to reinstate it. Needless to say, I had already been in the field for 25 years so I didn’t have to study. Since then, I’ve also added a general contractor’s license.

This is a family business now that my sons have graduated from junior college and are currently working with me.

Since my eldest son started working with me full time a year ago, he has started a YouTube page for the work we do from start to finish. It’s a lot of fun talking to all the people in different parts of the country in regards to concrete projects they’re doing themselves.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest struggle for me in the type of work I do is the Economy Fluctuations.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Odell Complete Concrete – what should we know?
I do all types of concrete work. decorative concrete, foundations, basically any type of concrete you can imagine I’ve probably done at some point.

Being in the field a lot of times I’ll pick up a block wall, landscaping, tiles, irrigation where I’m currently doing some concrete work, in other words, I can pretty much do it all.

I don’t typically sub out any work I do all work in house and I’m on every job start to finish.

We’re a third generation company.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The key to my success or anyone’s is perseverance, believe in yourself, never quit. if you have a bad experience or what you may perceive as such, change it to a positive learning experience.
