Meet David Lapin of Lapin International in Beverly Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Lapin.

Thanks for sharing your story with us David. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In South Africa as apartheid was ending and a new democracy was dawning, I became involved with Nelson Mandela’s government and business leaders in helping architect the new democracy. I was particularly involved in easing racial tensions and dealing with diversity, as well as establishing South African Business as a competitive force in the open global markets from which it was previously excluded. This led me to design our strategy frameworks to distinguish businesses and their offerings in hyper-competitive markets.

I started doing work for the American Federal Government around efficiency, ethics and racial issues in the Northern Mariana Islands. From there I moved the business to Los Angeles with my partner, Desi Rosenfield. Once here, our work with inter-racial tensions caught the attention of the Museum of Tolerance who had been commissioned by the LAPD to intervene after the Rodney King incident in LA. We designed the training for the LAPD, and have since trained over 100,000 officers of a variety of agencies. We also led the National Institutes for Hate Crimes and Terrorism at the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. This brought together criminal justice professionals from around the country where we guided them through a process to become more effective in dealing with hate and terror.

Most of our work is now in the private sector where we enjoy consulting relationships with some of America’s finest companies. My book, Lead By Greatness has also gained some significant attention.

Has it been a smooth road?
Not having been educated here, we haven’t had extended networks so growing our client base has been challenging. In the end we have relied on word of mouth and reputation.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We help leaders and corporations turn Purpose into profit. We do this through Strategic Distinction Workshops and developing Leadership Mastery. Our work does more than significantly increase the profitability of corporations and the effectiveness of teams. It also has deep impact on people’s lives and their relationships to their work. We are known for the degree to which we care passionately about each of our clients, the power of our executive coaching and the results our clients achieve. We are known for a different way of consulting, one which is much more intuitive and human. Our approach is described in my book, Lead By Greatness.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I have loved living in Los Angeles. It is a pity that California is not more business-hospitable so very few of our clients are actually based here. This means a lot of travel, and being that we are on the coast and most of America’s business decisions are made on the East Coast, the travel is intense. It would be great if there was less bureaucracy and fewer barriers for businesses here. Of course traffic is a problem in most big cities.
