Today we’d like to introduce you to David Gomez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us David. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We started in the Santa Fe Springs SwapMeet in 2005. I was looking to open a business and be my own boss but wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I said to myself walking around the Disney Store why not try doing something similar but WWE. So I started at the Swap Meet with about a Dozen tees. Those sold out In about two hours so I decided to keep going every Friday and sell more shirts after a while I noticed there was a market and I decided that I wanted to add action figures especially seeing that the most popular wrestlers action figures at that swap meet We’re selling for double or triple the price I wanted to make the action figures affordable to kids because I wanted them to be able to find their favorite wrestlers just like I was able to find mine when I was a kid by doing that we upset many of the other vendors but all our customers were excited after about being at the swap meet for eight years we had an opportunity to open our own storefront and we took Advantage we open the wrestling Guy store in February 2013 we have been fortunate enough to have support from WWE as far as merchandise goes. Mattel for Action figures. And also, many other vendors that have a WWE license we have also been blessed to have been able to provide fans a chance to meet their favorite wrestling superstar.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has not always been smooth as having such a niche market is tough. We’ve had moments where sales have been very slow and we were on the verge of closing. But fortunately many wrestlers that we have met along the way helped us out by promoting our store doing appearances or videos and our sales improved. While many think that as a small business owner you are bringing in tons of cash but it is actually the opposite it takes a lot of work and sacrifice. My goal is to not be rich but to be comfortable and I still have a lot of work to do to get to that point.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We specialize in selling all the WWE authentic and licensed merchandise. But I am most proud of is to be able to allow families or Fans of any age to be able to find their favorite action figure or a T-shirt. I am also proud to be able to allow fans to meet their favorite wrestling superstar.
What were you like growing up?
I was very shy as a kid growing up everyone considered me a little bit of a nerd because I was a wrestling fan and because I kept to myself. Having this business though has help me to open up and become more sociable.
