Today we’d like to introduce you to David Flores.
David, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As far as art is concerned, I’ve always been into the arts, into drawing and creating, so naturally, I just gravitated towards to it. I’ve had my ups and downs. I’ve traveled the world. Sewn many a seed. Just have had a really good time with it so far. It has always treated me well. But, how I got started… it was just something that was natural. I might have been introduced to it, but I really took it upon myself to say, this is really what I want to do.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never really a smooth road, I think. I don’t think when someone picks up a pen and paper and decides, this is how I want to make a living it’s ever going to be a smooth road. Those types of personalities tend to be on the extreme side of the emotional spectrum.
If there are troubles on the way, they are kind of self-inflicted. You could have a really smooth art career and have a really good go at it if you have your head straight and someone to manage your situation. There are ups and downs in everything. Yeah, there are ups and downs and it’s been a long road and I’m glad to say that I’ve come this far and I’m going to keep going.
David Flores Art – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The company name is David Flores Art, Gift Universal. We have a new company starting right now, under brand new management; everything has been going really well. We do big art. Murals. We do installations. We do toys and vinyl. Clothes and textiles. We do large sculptures and all sorts of creative ways.
What are you known for: creatively, I like to paint large murals. I get the most fulfillment out of finishing a very large mural. I have a good time with those.
I am most proud of some of the larger scale murals that we’ve done, because of the amount of work and how long they took and how demanding they were physically. It requires a lot to get them done, the demand on your physical self.
For instance, the Coliseum. It’s a beautiful place and it’s is there indefinitely. We will keep taking care of it. That one was a bitch and it took forever to do. It was 106F direct sunlight and we got it done one square foot at a time. One of my most proud pieces.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Receiving a Certificate of Recognition from the California Senate and a Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Los Angeles this year has been a moment of Pride for me. Announcing the Dodgers game was also a moment I didn’t expect.
