Meet David Diaz and Shachar Boussani of Hummingbird Studios in Sherman Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Diaz and Shachar Boussani.

David Daniel and Shachar, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We originally met playing in an urban-reggae band, over ten years ago. David on drums and Shachar on bass. That’s where we first formed our professional relationship, and since then have worked together on countless projects/records with many different artists, and in the process, became really good friends. As our careers evolved, and our skills sharpened, we both found ourselves ready for the next step. That’s when the opportunity to open up a studio together, as partners, fell into our laps. We knew then that it was the natural evolution for us, and we took it upon ourselves to make it happen.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
David: It definitely hasn’t been smooth as I think any other business is not smooth when it first opens. There is always a learning curve for these kinds of things and we still continue to learn more everyday we’re here. One of my goals for this studio is to build a community around it, and that takes time. So, being patient with the process can be a struggle but I do my best to keep my eye on the future goals for this studio and to move in a way that is going to take me closer to what I’m envisioning for us. Learning to work together and communicate efficiently is always something that people in general need to get better at and I wouldn’t necessarily call it a struggle but we both are learning better ways to communicate with each other everyday and in that have become a much stronger team.

Shachar: Same here. Personal growth is what it’s all about. It’s become very obvious to me how that affects the success of a business. There are always obstacles along the way. I tend to keep a positive outlook and focus on the things that DO go smoothly, and I would say we definitely have had some of those, as well. For me, many of the obstacles were in the form of turning down other, very attractive job offers and re-focusing my life path (which was sidetracked a little for a few years). I just knew that without actively being a part of music-making, I’m unhappy- no matter the other benefits of a different job. I decided it’s time for my studio, with no compromises and no distractions. Planning that, and making it JUST the way we both wanted it was a big one! Many months of planning, researching and drafting… Ultimately, I believe that the right team can get over any hurdle, and so here we are!

Hummingbird Studios – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Hummingbird Studios is a professional recording studio and a music production house. We work with artists from the beginning to the final stages of making a record; whether that means we’re involved in every step of the way, or only a few. We each, individually, have our own set of skills we’ve been honing for the last 20+ years, and we feel that these skills compliment each other very well, in a sense that covers a wide spectrum of the record-making process. Shachar has worked in many different recording studios throughout the years as a recording engineer, producer, and mixing engineer. Clients varying from well-established artists, as well as first timers, needing guidance.

Additionally, Shachar worked on different major-network, prime-time tv shows and feature films as a sound/music editor, and has several award nominations. David has been a professional drummer for over 20 years and has recorded and/or performed with artists such as Eryn Allen Kane, Stax Records, Steve Vai, and many more. He’s also produced and wrote with many artists, and has released well-received music, and is in the process of releasing lots more. We are most proud of the strong community of incredible, high-quality artists and musicians that surround us. The thing that sets us apart is the understanding of being an artist and the creative process, as we, ourselves, have been in that position many times, and can fully empathize with, and cater to other artists and musicians.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
We only opened the studio in Dec 2018, so not much time has passed, but for the time being, our proudest moment would be when we finally completed the upgrades and renovations we had planned for months and were finally open and ready to deliver the highest quality product we can offer our community!
