Meet David Bowles

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Bowles.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I first picked up a camera in 2008, my best friend was always into art and photography he is one of those good at everything kind of people. I purchased a Canon SLR Rebel and started taking classes at my community college to just learn the basics.

At the time I was also in a band, so I knew a lot of photographers or friends who had a camera, so I was always intrigued to buy them but just couldn’t really afford to buy one. In 2008, I got a fat tax return and pulled the trigger on a Canon Rebel T1i, at this time my son was one his way, so It was easy to convince the wife like (Babe we need a good camera to take pictures of the baby)…

About a year went by with the T1, I shot a few local bands, the baby of course, and some abstract stuff but between being a musician and going into culinary school I just never found time to shoot and ended up selling all my gear.

A few years went by, I was now a “chef” cooking alongside some LA’s best chefs, doing some artsy-fartsy kinda cooking and ended up giving up the rockstar dream. Though I always felt like something was missing from my life, some sort of calling, or just void. My best friend Matthew Stella (Who is an amazing artist check him out), was still going strong with his art and photography.

I took a few days off work and went up to Arizona to visit my buddy Matt, who works as a Tattoo artist and part-time photographer. On my trip he showed me this nifty Sony A6000, we went out and took some shots, and I fell back in love!

That was about four years ago, Ever since then I haven’t stopped, I’ve worked with a few up and coming actors, and musicians, shot a few weddings and events, but mainly I stick to portraits and some adventure stuff.

Recently I traveled to Japan and shot to gorgeous models, and took some amazing pictures around Tokyo, which will be released soon as a coffee table book titled “This Is Tokyo”.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s never a smooth road, and anyone who tells you that is lying. This industry is cut-throat. The biggest hurdle is overcoming my self-doubt.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the David Scott Bowles Photo & Film story. Tell us more about the business.
So mainly I stick to portraits, Ive always been inspired by artist like Joey L, Nick Francher, and Marco Grob. I love working in the studio and having full control over my images. I just started shooting a lot more video, I love the whole process, especially the editing and color grading of videos. I feel I have a unique look to a lot of my images, and video, I think you can easily see who inspires me but not to the point where I’m coping someone’s style.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
This Industry seems to change soooo fast. In the next five years though Id love to do a lot more studio stuff, and commercial work. I love working with musicians, being that I was once a musician my self its easy to vibe with them.

Id love to do more video, and I could easily see my self going full Filmmaker rather than a photographer.

Pricing:

  • Portrait Sessions $100+
