Meet Dee Norman of Envy Body Piercing in Redondo Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dee Norman.

Dee, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started doing piercings professionally in 2006 in the Hollywood area. The industry and culture of that time and place is not what you see today. The people getting pierced were not influencers and celebs getting dainty gold jewelry. All that came about with Instagram. It was still a taboo thing to be a pierced person, but that’s the kind of person I’ve wanted to be since I can recall. Through a long road of bumps and ups and downs, I find myself at the best studio in Los Angeles.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to get where you want to be is seldom smooth, but that makes it all the more rewarding when you achieve your goals. For me, the goals to reach are endless. I’m constantly pushing to be better, forever learning. It hasn’t been easy, it still isn’t. How boring would that be?! To become a piercer, the traditional and really only acceptable way is through an apprenticeship. For me, this meant working for free, 6 or 7 days a week. Back then, I had been commuting via public transportation for hours to work long days that I wouldn’t be compensated for. If I was lucky, I’d get a tip or two from doing extra work for an artist, hopefully enough to get me train fare and something to eat. I was broke. I got my first job at a reputable studio shortly after, but I still had to prove myself. It took years of struggle and hard work to first build a reputation, then clientele. The ultimate goal for a studio setting has been achieved in being hired at Envy three years ago.
