Meet Danny Kirschenbaum of Umico in Atwater Village

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danny Kirschenbaum.

Danny, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I come from a background in custom, hand-made presentation goods, so quality has always been extremely important to me. That mentality followed me to Tokyo, where quality and presentation is just as important as the product itself. I found myself very at home working in a photo gallery there as well as a few menswear brands, helping them grow to an international level through quality and service.

Has it been a smooth road?
No – running a small business is difficult, period. In the case of Umico, moving three times in two years hasn’t helped to pave a smooth road. And with going further into framing, it’s going to be a matter of finding the right space again, but at least I’m used to it!

Please tell us more about your art.
We specialize in giclee printing, art scanning, and custom framing and love helping artists sell their work both through our website and other galleries. Umico is growing into an online shop to sell prints from artists we work with and are inspired by. The studio is built on supporting artists.

When first opening Umico, my goal was to incorporate what I know about running a small business and providing high-quality goods with unmatched service. It’s been a few years and I’m able to see first-hand what’s possible when you say ‘yes’ to weird ideas and aren’t afraid to make mistakes along the way.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
It’s clear to me that the art market, as well as any interior decorating industry, is going to survive the next 12 months, if not longer. Fortunately for those of us in the art world, with everyone working from home, it’s become an obvious space to improve. This is really exciting to me because artists have more of a chance to get their work out to a larger and varied audience.
