Meet Danny Kang of High Five Hand Therapy and Rehabilitation in Garden Grove

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danny Kang.

Danny, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I pursued my degree in Occupational Therapy and graduated from USC in 2003. Afterwards, I joined the U.S. Army as a medical specialist and served for 4 years before returning back to Southern California. I then completed my rigorous training as a Certified Hand Therapist and worked in an outpatient clinic. In early 2015 my vision became a reality when I opened up my clinic specializing in hand therapy and manual therapy techniques which is also known as Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM). I created a business model focusing on assisting clients with varying diagnoses to continue engaging in their meaningful occupations through a client-centered approach.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wish I could say it was a smooth process, but akin to most business owners and entrepreneurs, I had to face many challenges and obstacles to pursue my goals. The first challenge was starting my own clinic with a business plan that separated itself from the competition through a unique approach. The second challenge was to determine how to acquire a loyal and immense client-base. The last hurdle was to promote not only myself, but my business to the community. Thankfully, social media has made an enormous impact on my business and the scope of my reach in spreading my philosophy and vision of advocating a healthy lifestyle and improved quality of life as an occupational therapist.

High Five Hand Therapy and Rehabilitation – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
First and foremost, the idea and foundation of my business began at church. During the sermon, the pastor deviated from the normative greeting and told the church members to high-five one another instead of the usual handshake. During this engagement, I immediately noticed the joyous and lively reaction that increased the overall energy level of the congregation. With that in mind, I named my company High-Five Hand Therapy with the idea of creating a specialized clinic envisioning the concept of a fun and relaxed environment to better connect with my clients and create long-lasting connections through client-centered care. As a company, I am most proud of our holistic approach and the idea that the body works as one unit when treating a client because each individual is unique. Another successful component that was the most rewarding was the scope of my influence in the social media world to raise awareness to the public about different ailments and conditions that many suffer whether the person is physically active or not. I was also able to promote education on the human body and its function, and the promotion of physical activity, health, and wellness.

So what is Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)? IASTM is an evidence-based treatment that enhances healing and improves mobility of soft tissue and fascial restrictions be effectively breaking down scar tissue. Scar tissue limits range of motion, causes abnormal sensory inputs that produce dysfunctional movement, pain, and sensitization. IASTM breaks the cycle of pain and dysfunctional movement through use of surgical grade stainless steel instruments. The outcomes of this treatment breakdown collagen cross-links, facilitates reflex changes, alters spinal reflex activity, increases rate of blood flow, increases cellular activity, and increases histamine response. We have seen a wide array of clientele from body builders, powerlifters, sports athletes, police force, firefighters, individuals in the dental field, those who have desk jobs, and anything else you can think of!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
One of my greatest achievements in my career so far is seeing the reactions from my clients. A myriad of clients come in with pain and problems that they deem chronic after attempting multiple remedies. After their sessions, they leave with ecstatic expressions from the alleviated pain, and the increased mobility and function. Most importantly, they come back and report an improved quality of life!
