Today we’d like to introduce you to Danilo Batson.
Danilo, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We started Spicy Green Book in June 2020 in response to the public reaction of the murder of George Floyd. We wanted to create a space where people may find Black businesses in their local community to support. More than that, we aimed to try showcase the business in the best way possible by creating professional content in the hopes the business may get a few extra supporters from those that find them by way of Spicy Green Book.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Our businesses started in the height of Covid, so there were some unique circumstance in starting this nonprofit.
Some businesses were struggling with the new changes that had been mandated and the severe reduction of foot traffic. Because of this, we felt it was even more imperative that we could do all we can to help business owners.
The in-person Food Market Events we now host had several challenges of finding a venue that would let us host this event. It was a scary time as we didn’t know what would happen, but we knew we had to continue to work diligently to help those in dire need.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.
We are Spicy Green Book – a virtual directory for Black-owned food and beverage businesses throughout the US and Canada.
Spicy Green Book provides a wide variety of professional services to Black-owned food and drink business owners. These include online marketing and advertising, content creation, photography and videography, business development education, and more.
We do this by getting to know these business owners, understanding their most pressing needs, and fulfilling those needs by pairing them with qualified professional volunteers. Our growing group of volunteers welcomes everyone who wants to spark positive change.
We are a nonprofit organization, so all contributions received go toward the upkeep and growth of the online directory, new SGB projects, and other causes which benefit the Black community.
Support for these businesses will:
-Decrease the wealth gap
-Create more job opportunities
-Prevent further injustices
-Implement needed reform
-Ensure marginalized people will receive the representation they deserve.
