Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Bernard.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always dreamed of doing hair when I was younger so when I got to the 11th grade I ended up enrolling in John Wesley beauty and barber college to practice cosmetology through an ROP program. After I graduated high school I had a child and decided to get a part-time job at a grocery store and quit dealing with hair altogether. It wasn’t until I had my second daughter six years later when I realized I didn’t want to be stuck at a dead-end job forever so I quit and followed my true passion. I started working in a hair salon about three months after as a hair braider. After a year my clientele wasn’t where I wanted it to be so I decided to leave the salon and braid from home instead and here we are five years later and my clientele is better than I could’ve EVER imagined!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, the road wasn’t always smooth, I most definitely had bumps along the way. Me jumping into a salon right away was hard with me trying to build up my clientele, pay booth rent and keep up with my household/bills were sometimes a struggle. There were times when it was so overwhelming that I wanted to quit and go back to working a typical 9-5 but I decided it was best to just stick it out. Being an entrepreneur is never easy starting out you just have to keep the faith and continue to work towards your dreams!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Braids By Danni story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in braiding hair, I pretty much do all types of braid styles. I’m proud of my abundance of returning clientele, it lets me know that I’m doing something right! I pride myself on being reliable, friendly, and an overall good person who’s in it for more than just the money. When it’s actually your passion it shows!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, I feel our city is a good place for a business like mine.
