Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Arróniz.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey began five years ago when I started taking pictures of basketball hoops as a hobby. Basketball has always been my biggest passion, so I found really interesting capturing the different shapes and colors of basketball courts everywhere I traveled to. I didn’t expect this to lead me where I am today, but after a few months of photographing hoops with my phone, I bought my first camera. From that point, it all went as it was meant to be.
It got to a point when I thought: “What if I create a platform to share my content and share my passion for the game of basketball?” That’s how Hoops Outside was born.
Since my devotion had always been journalism, I started feeling that my mission was tell people’s stories which are related to basketball. Once thing leads to the other and sports photography also called my attention. Through video and photography, I had the perfect tools to share my point of view and bring a different and more artistic perspective to basketball content creation.
After a few years working as a freelance in Spain, I decided to embark myself in a new adventure and move to Los Angeles, the hoops paradise, to pursue my dream. From the moment I got to LA, I’ve been lucky enough to find people who support and believe in what I do. Besides that, I have an excellent team based in Spain who does a great job to make Hoops Outside grow year by year, with the ultimate goal of bringing to Europe some of the American basketball cultures.
The company I’ve been working at as a content creator is Veniceball, an internationally known agency specializing in the organization of basketball events with the aim of spreading love through basketball. I joined their team, and after a few weeks a new project called the Hoop Bus came up. As they define it, the Hoop Bus is the ultimate basketball machine which travels around the country bringing communities together, always fighting for a reason which goes beyond basketball.
I got really inspired by them, and my team and I ended up renovation our first basketball court in India last February. People loved it, and eventually it brought us the opportunity to carry on more projects like this one. Everything falls apart around the month of March due to COVID-19, but instead of taking it in a bad way, we used it as a motivation for the summer. I decided to go back to Spain, we could set up and refurbish four more basketball courts.
From now on, my future is uncertain in some way but clear ate the same time, I want to keep doing what I love the most, telling stories through basketball.
Has it been a smooth road?
Working as a creative has never been a smooth road for anyone. You have to fight against the odds and get surrounded by people who appreciate your job and really know how much work you have to put in. Furthermore, you have to add the extra difficulty of living outside your hometown. I consider myself as a very passionate guy with the ability of making people believe in what I do, but some people find hard to understand what is the point of just focusing on basketball. I try to prove to everyone the reason behind through my work, and it may inspire some people to fight for what they believe in.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My company is called Hoops Outside. Its name comes from combining two of my biggest passions, basketball and traveling. Currently, Hoops Outside is a creative agency based in Los Angeles and Madrid specializing in the creation of audiovisual content related to basketball and the renovation of basketball courts from an artistic perspective. In the country where I come from, Spain, basketball content has always been looked from a very formal and functional perspective, with barely no room for creativity. I wanted to be the pioneer in the field and become the first company fully specializing in basketball content creation. My filmmaking and photographic skills, in addition with my coworker Fernando Miranda illustration and drawing abilities truly make the perfect combination every client looks for. Within the court renovation department, both Iván Sánchez and Lucía López-Bueno play a really important job to make projects happen. I feel really lucky with the team we’ve created and grateful for other people who are always willing to help me out.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely, Los Angeles is one of the top cities in the world to be and entrepreneur and start your own business. It is a city where dreams can be made if you are willing to go the extra mile. There are plenty of connections and its quite easy to get in contact with people.
