Meet Daniel Alvarez of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Alvarez

Hi Daniel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raise in Los Angeles. My parents are from Mexico. I’ve moved around a lot and have lived all over Los Angeles. I have been into art most of my life and have been doing stand up comedy for the past three years. On October 28, 2007 I was shoot leaving a halloween party. The bullet hit my spinal cord at the t3 -t4 level which made me a paraplegic so I basically can’t move or feel from the chest down and am a wheelchair user. I’ve been a photographer and also a painter in my life but right now most of my energy is going into stand up.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The simple answer is no it has been a very difficult experience having to adjust to life in a wheelchair and not being able to move or feel from the chest down. I’ve had to learn how to do almost everything again. The biggest adjustment has been mental. People see you as less then or not equal to the when your in a chair. Women don’t really look at me the same way. The world is not built for wheelchairs so you always have to be prepared to get carried or not do certain things because they are not wheelchair accessible.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a stand up comedian with a very unique perspective on life and I have definitely had some crazy experiences because of it. I am very quickly becoming one of the funniest up and coming comedians in Los Angeles and have performed at most of the major comedy clubs in Los Angeles.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I will feel like I’m successful when I can live comfortably without having any financial worries in my life and I have a special out on one of the major platforms like Netflix or Hulu
