Meet Dana Ross of Downtown Photo Collective in Fashion District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Ross.

The Downtown Photo Collective was started by Jeff Kober as a creative space that member photographers could share in DTLA. It has a well-equipped traditional black and white darkroom, a separate darkroom for alternative processes and a large shooting space for art and commercial work. We put on art shows, workshops and music events throughout the year.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We haven’t had any major difficulties during the year and half we have been operating. We are looking for a few more members to reach a state of financial equilibrium. At $300/ month it’s a pretty great deal.

Please tell us about Downtown Photo Collective.
I think our defining characteristic is that our members have autonomous usage of the space. Some are just using it for darkroom work and some just for photography. Some use it for both. We put on a lot of art events there. We recently had an exhibition of photos by Soomin Kim who came from Korea to present her work. We’re having a show of chemical-darkroom prints which opens Saturday June 3.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I think we would have started the cultural and social events sooner. It feels really good use the space as a center for culture and sharing.
