Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan King.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was playing bass in my band several years ago. I procured the sound system including speakers, mics, cables, mixers and amplifiers for the band and maintained them in good order. It was a great sounding system and flexible depending on the size of the venue.
At the end of one of the events, someone from the crowd asked if they could rent my sound system. I said no but you can rent me AND the sound system. A month later I was doing sound set up and mixing for the band and making much more money than I would have just being a musician.
My band broke up months after that…which happens often with cover bands and I decided to put away my bass and expand the system with classic sound equipment and simple values. I started on Craigslist and in Summer I am busy nearly every weekend…from Malibu to Joshua Tree. House parties, weddings, conferences, ceremonies, Fun runs and benefits, graduation parties…all kinds of folks call me now. It’s like playing in a band but I don’t have to learn new songs for the gigs.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is very seasonal From November to March it is dead….so I have to keep my day job…. always. I have to police my gear as well and there have been times when narcistic lead singers toss my mic stands and mics to the floor causing damage and this is not fun. Death Metal bands are the most challenging as my system is pushed to limit but only blew a speaker once.
The Sound Guy – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
35 years of live performance experience! We understand the needs of musicians playing live. We want to take some of the heavy burden off of Event Planners and let us take care of one of the most important success factors of any event…. the sound.
We don’t utilize plastic Powered Speakers or Monitors! Nothing sounds better than wood and woofers to bring out the best and most accurate LIVE sound. That is why guitarists never perform with a plastic amplifier and cabinet. Additionally, it takes 2x the wiring on your stage to hook up powered monitors…. more wires = more accidents and interference. We can bring to your gig the right amount of equipment and expertise to pull off even the most difficult and “last minute” sound system needs.
Can’t hear the vocals? We only use Electro Voice speakers with the best horns for incredible vocal reproduction and reliable USA made Crown amps. See the system photos for something that may suit your needs. Call this morning and we will be there tonight!
We not only bring the equipment but a Full Service. Set it up, mix it, maintain it, and tear it down, and haul it away. We do gigs with as many as 9 bands in one night!! DJ support too with hefty 18 inch EV subs for deep bass. Our systems are custom assembled to meet the needs of your event. Our flexibility is our strength. Our reliability is our promise.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Getting my first review on YELP! And second doing sound for the Jimi Hendrix Tribute Band!
