Meet Dan Crawley of CrossFit High Voltage in Burbank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Crawley.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was not a natural athlete, nor did I gravitate to sports as a child, adolescent, or adult. On the contrary, I had very negative feelings associated with it. I struggled with my weight throughout my life and honestly didn’t care much.

As an adult, I was closing in on 30, overweight, unhappy, and working 70-105 hour work weeks in a career I loved but that did not contribute to sustaining a healthy life. Coming out of a long-term relationship and having to jump back into the dating pool, a change was needed.

I started out with P90X from an infomercial and followed it diligently in my garage and ate the exact meal plans. Dropped a lot of weight, but it was solitary, unsatisfying, and I had hit a plateau. Looking for a change, I walked into CrossFit High Voltage shortly after New Years in 2011.

I found a program and methodology that I loved and gave amazing results. I found the exact opposite of the all of the negative associations with athletics from my childhood. I found a community that cheered loudest for the last person to finish. I found a family and a home, and a place where just being myself was good enough.

Being an enthusiastic member led to training to become a coach & competitor, and finally, in June 2015 I bought the business and am now a proud owner.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No small business is a smooth road. Owning a CrossFit gym is like being in a marriage with all of your members and staff. While the rules of business must be respected to ultimately find success, feelings and emotions are a strong influence. These are things not easily quantifiable and challenging to navigate. It isn’t just numbers and a bottom line to consider, it’s setting people up with a foundation of health for the rest of their lives- and giving them a supportive and nurturing community that cares about helping them build it.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with CrossFit High Voltage – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
High Voltage is a positive Community of people who have come together to live their best and healthiest lives possible.

We achieve this through the combination of professional coaching, world-class programming, and a strong support system.

High Voltage has set out to change the way we all view fitness.

We push past the known limits and current dogma to provide the most cutting edge health and fitness programs possible.

We provide the highest levels of personal and group coaching, energetic workouts, for long term, sustainable, and meaningful results.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Always looking to expand and innovate. We are looking to move into a larger space and expand our advertising and social media presence.

Eager to reach out to local schools and municipal administration to implement more programs for youth and families.

We’d also like to work with corporate partners in the Burbank area that serve the entertainment industry to implement healthy lifestyle choices and wellness programs for their employees.
