Today we’d like to introduce you to Daisy Gomez.
Daisy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am 28 years super young. My leadership journey began five years ago after I coincidentally attended a self-development workshop. That day I learned the difference between a Manager and a Leader. The next day I walked into work and placed my two weeks notice. I quit my job at a hospital after the manager told me I would be fired if I took another day off work.
At the time, my little brother suffered a severe brain injury leaving him critically disabled, quadriplegic to be exact. Therefore, I took a leap of faith because I felt that I had to choose between being present for my brother’s brain surgeries or keep my $13/hr cubicle job. So I quit. The only other skill I had besides billing and coding at the time was Hairstyling. Something I just did for fun. Fast forward to the present, I have been able to provide for myself from Hairstyling all while taking Care of my brother from home. Quitting that job was the best thing that ever happened to me. I was able to bring my brother home to recover and start my own business. I’m a caregiver/hairstylist. I love everything hair. I specialize in Bridal Hairstyling and my services are mobile so I get to travel all over Los Angeles and surrounding areas. Just a year ago, I opened an extension of my hairstyling services and started a lifestyle brand named Honey Dose. I handcraft all kinds of hair accessories. My goal is to cover all areas of hairstyling and so far I have the service and products and very soon the education. I would love to teach hairstyling and help other women build their business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Everything about my job has been a struggle from beginning to now. To be self-motivated, self-paid, and self-educated is a struggle altogether. But it is a struggle worth fighting for. One of the significant struggles that I have come to appreciate is creating this job for myself. It was very difficult at first to get paid to do hairstyling because most people don’t view it as a traditional job. Turning a hobby into a business is a struggle but I made it happen. I used to have one to two clients every few months. Now I’m booked every weekend for the rest of the year except for the weekends that I take vacations! I’ve really put so much passion and consistency into my hairstyling and continue to do so.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Styled by Miss Daisy & Honey Dose story. Tell us more about the business.
I have two businesses that consist of both products and services but I will describe them individually and why I chose to keep them separate. My hairstyling service is called Styled by Miss Daisy. It is a mobile concierge specializing in Bridal Hairstyling. I service Los Angeles and surrounding areas. What sets my business apart is my ability to prioritize and establish a friendship rather than a business transaction. I can honestly say that I become and remain friends with 90% of my clients. I always say, “people don’t just buy my service, they buy me.” I do my best to deliver a joyful and memorable experience for all of my clients. From new and clean tools, the best hair products, to finishing on time, my clients know that they are important to me. I am so blessed to work with women who allow me to practice what I love most. I will forever be grateful. And celebrating for other women on their special day and witnessing their love story fills my heart me with joy. It’s like my own real-life telenovela! And speaking of love stories….. I created a business called Honey Dose as an extension of my hairstyling services. HONEY DOSE is a lifestyle brand made to exemplify the sweetest women. We tell a different kind of love story. One without a prince charming and what that means is we like to tell stories of personal and professional accomplishments women have made. We create empowerment statement hair jewelry and we tell stories of the women who wear them. Our staple accessories include wording hair clips that say CHINGONA (means badass woman ), MUÑECA (babydoll), and REINA (queen). These are the first of their kind and so much detail goes into them . On contrary of my hairstyling service where I make a connection in person with my clients, Honey Dose makes a connection with women all around the country through jewelry, cute packaging, and handwritten notes. Honey Dose is my personal love story because I ONLY create things I love.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I do not believe in good or bad luck. I believe in energy. I believe in using love not only in romance but as a powerful force of energy. Everything I do well is because it involves something that I love doing. When you love what you do, you do it well and therefore everything else around it falls naturally into place. You begin to attract people that believe in your vision and hard work and you establish connections, referrals, etc. Every part of my job sometimes feels coincidental. It feels like everything comes together without me forcing things to come together. That is the beautiful thing about practicing love as a source of energy.
