Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia McConnell.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My brand, Leafy Beans Coffee LLC., was born out of my love for a good cup of coffee. There is nothing quite like a cup of coffee to soothe one’s mind, body, and soul. This love of coffee set me on a quest to find that perfect cup of coffee which led me to the high altitude, rich, volcanic, organic soil of Chiapas, Mexico.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to building my business has been a little bit bumpy as I’m sure most start-up businesses are. It’s been a challenge sourcing my coffee to financing my business. However, the most challenging thing I’ve found about getting my business up and running was learning the importation process. It was defiantly a challenge coordinating with customs on both sides of the border to get my coffee shipped from the fields in Chiapas Mexico to my business in California. Even though these things were all difficult, I welcome the challenge and look forward to the future.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I import and distribute organically grown Mexican coffee. My company is a female minority, 1st generation, Mexican-American owned business. My deliciously fresh coffee is produced from one single ingredient: fresh organic beans grown in the high altitude, rich soil of Chiapas, Mexico. My Arabica coffee beans are handpicked by local indigenous farmers who harvest their crops with pride. All natural organic coffee beans without any additives, just nurturing, water, and rich volcanic soil. Once picked, my Arabica beans are washed, peeled, dried, ground, packaged, sealed, and shipped on site. This process assures that my coffee maintains its freshness for the consumer.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
The advise I’d give to anyone who is starting a new business to be patient and to persevere. Don’t give up on making your dream a reality even if people are discouraging or don’t have faith in you. Never view your business as work or you’ll be miserable. Instead, make your business a personal challenge to succeed and take every opportunity that comes your way.
