Today we’d like to introduce you to Crow.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I remember my earliest memories writing songs were on the playground in primary school, or in my childhood bedroom. It was something I instinctively leaned towards whenever I felt lonely or misunderstood. It was and still is my way of healing and understanding myself; creating something that no one can take away from me. I could never have guessed it was something I could turn into a career.
I played many sports as a kid, took lots of art and music classes, and even got serious about dancing. In my early teens, I wanted to be a choreographer but kept getting lots of injuries from dancing around 20 hours a week. All the time, I had to take off due to my injuries made me fall behind in my skills. Eventually, I decided to let it go. I knew there was an undercurrent of change that I couldn’t resist.
I was heartbroken and felt confused about my path, so I turned to songwriting again. I showed my closest friend a song I had written, and it really moved her. The exchange was so gratifying, and I felt something really powerful becoming. A few months later, I decided to post a cover on YouTube.
From then on, my life changed completely. I got approached by production companies, managers, and labels to create music and build my brand. Bookers were reaching out to book me for their shows, and I started playing all over town. I knew nothing about the business, but I just threw myself in head first and never looked back.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road thus far has been potent with many lessons. Being thrown into the industry at just 15 years old, I was subjected to many different opinions about my identity, my music, and where my career should go.
I was tossed between different producers who would try to impose their style on my songwriting, entrusted managers who had no interest in my health, safety, or vision as a young artist, and sexualized in my early teens by photographers and mentors alike.
As confusing and heartbreaking as these situations were for me at the time, I’m grateful for how they shaped me into the person and artist I am today. I always say my favorite part about failing or falling in the process of reclaiming.
That’s what I’ve been focused on for the past few years: reclaiming the parts of myself I gave away to those situations and people, through my art. I’m excited to share this new chapter of music. It’s very personal, and I feel proud of myself and the work I put into it along with my collaborators.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am an artist. I specialize in music, particularly songwriting. I also play a myriad of instruments and sing the songs that I write. I’m beginning to learn how to produce them myself, as well. I’m known for my outspoken, heart-wrenching lyrics and melodies.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
