Meet Cristina Gutierrez of Omoir Photography in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristina Gutierrez.

Mexican-born photographer Cristina, the youngest of seven children, spent a great part of her childhood photographing her nieces and nephews. Taking many paths throughout her photographic journey, Cristina’s early access to her sister’s film camera predetermined what is now her specialty, child portraiture.

Cristina’s photographs compound the many sensitive elements of the human condition. She is inspired by mysticism, sadness, solitude, spirituality, love and loss; much of this inspiration begins in her dreams. Her work, holding deep melodramatic undertones, has been referred to as elegant, otherworldly, edgy and on the fringe.

Cristina has been part of many group exhibitions, has shown solo and is the recipient of several photography awards and scholarships.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There certainly have been many challenges along the way.

I raised 5 children on a single income and as a single parent; this always made time and money and obstacle from having time to photograph to having enough money to purchase equipment/props etc.

I must add this is also a male dominated field and it has been hard (competition-wise) to break that barrier and be given a chance.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I photograph people. People in both happy, dark and mystical situations. I specialize in wedding photography and portraiture, mostly child portraiture.

I adore capturing children at their rawest, I have a knack for this and am mostly known for my conceptual child photography, this sets me apart from most I believe.

Also, I am currently building my conceptual wedding brand, I believe this will also set me apart from the competition.

Mentally I am very much the definition of a starving artist and so I am most proud of the fact that I, a non-business mind, was able to build an actual business of my own.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was a quiet girl with an unbound imagination. Mysticism always intrigued me. I always felt out of place and lonely; my sister is 10 years older than I and so I had no one I could relate to.

I remember always hiding in dark rooms or hallways when we had family gatherings. I disliked any attention but loved to observe everyone. I had cousins that would put on dance shows and play and I would run away hoping the adults wouldn’t call on me to go next.

Salvador Dali was my first artistic love. I remember picking up a magazine with his artwork in it at a doctor’s office when I was in 4th grade. I was dumbfounded! I remember feeling connected and like someone had portrayed my feelings and thoughts on paper.

I was no painter nor sculptor so photography became my outlet.
