Meet Courtney Hawkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Hawkins.

Hi Courtney, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started The Simple Glamazon in 2014 as an outlet to show other plus-size career women that it didn’t have to be difficult to look cute and feel great when getting dressed. Honestly, I was having my family members take pictures of me with my camera phone and writing about why I chose that outfit. I’ve always enjoyed style, so sharing what I was wearing and why was a lot of fun for me. Eventually The Simple Glamazon turned into a full lifestyle blog when I added beauty, travel, and fitness. I’ve been able to share my experiences and some of my favorite brands with my readers and I am grateful they have been receptive.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been easy. When I first started, convincing my friends and family to help was hard. They weren’t familiar with the idea of a blog so to them I was just taking pictures of myself and posting them on the internet. Then over time, I struggled with finding a way to standout among all the bloggers that were in the market. How was I going to make my content relevant in a sea of plus size bloggers? My professional career was moving forward so I found myself having to choose what I could focus on at the moment. Eventually, I was able to find balance, but it wasn’t easy. I knew I wanted to have a voice in this space, so I found a way to make it happen.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Outside of blogging I work in learning and development. My role is understand how my colleagues learn so I am able to design and develop impactful curriculum that will help them complete their roles more efficiently.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
A lot of thing makes me happy.

Over time I have learned that happiness will not come from one single source. Traveling makes me happy because I can escape from my world for a short period of time and see how the rest of the world goes through life. I love to spend time with family and friends doing nothing. Sometimes just enjoying someone’s company and having a great conversation is what you need. Having a solo shopping day or shopping day with friends always puts a smile on my face because it’s time spent with someone you care about deeply, whether that person is me or my friends. Having the freedom to live and come and go as I please is probably what makes me the happiest.
